In the UAE, Donell Gumiran won the 2025 National Award with an image titled A Timeless Tradition , show- ing an older Emirati woman in abaya and burqa on Abu Dhabi’s Corniche, with an old fishing boat in the foreground and the city’s high-rises in the distance. Commenting on his win, he said: “Photography allows me to tell stories and capture moments that matter. ‘A Timeless Tradition’ is special to me because it reflects the rich culture and heritage of the UAE. I’m thankful to Sony and the World Photography Organisation for giv- ing photographers like me a chance to share our work with the world.” The 2026 exhibition, which opens at Somerset House in London from 17 April to 4 May 2026, will feature a selec- tion of winning and shortlisted images from the 2026 Awards, as well as special presentations by Zed Nelson. Alongside the Professional, Open, Student and Youth winners, visitors will also see the work of finalists from over 200 countries, showcasing a wide range of styles, subjects and perspectives. With free public entry and a growing global audience, the exhibition is designed to bring contemporary photogra- phy to the widest possible community. It is not just a celebration of photography, it is an invita- tion to reflect on how we see, what we value, and which stories are shaping the world right now. .

Blossoms in a Dreamscape, 2025. Bathed in soft pink hues, these weeping plum trees in full bloom create a dreamlike atmosphere. Their elegant branches stretch upwards, forming a magical canopy that transports viewers to a serene and otherworldly setting. The delicate petals, scattered across the ground, form a natural carpet that enhances the beauty of the landscape. © Yoshiaki Kudo, Japan, Shortlist, Open Competition, Landscape, 2025 Sony World Photography Awards

[L] Cathedral, 2025. Stuðlagil Canyon in eastern Iceland is a striking geological formation distinguished by its towering basalt columns and vibrant turquoise glacial river. The canyon is reminiscent of a Gothic cathedral, with its basalt columns resembling the grand, vertical pillars commonly found in Gothic architecture. © Marcin Zajac, Poland, Shortlist, Open Competition, Landscape, 2025 Sony World Photography Awards [R] Tbourida La Chute, 2025. Many of the photographs taken during a traditional Moroccan ‘tbourida’ show the riders firing their rifles.
