A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
Spring always brings a sense of revitalization, and here in Sunrise, it also ushers in a season of exciting opportunities for community engagement and celebration. As we settle into 2025, I am thrilled to share a preview of the many ways our city is coming together to embrace this vibrant season. As you read this, we will have just unveiled the all-new Village Art Plaza near City Park. This creative oasis will host dozens of unique events each year and be home to local artist-created murals and sculptures that should inspire anyone who visits. This project has been in the works for nearly five years, and we’re thrilled to finally see it open to the public for all to appreciate. The park plans to host recurring events like Farmer’s Markets and food truck events, live music, interactive audio tours, and state-of-the- art augmented reality experiences. This plaza is a truly special area that we all hope you’ll enjoy. Also, in time for spring, our city is thrilled to see the completion of our 500-space parking garage attached to the new City Hall and our improved Sunrise Civic Center Amphitheater . The addition of parking will help improve your customer experience at City Hall and the entertainment experience at our Civic Center and Amphitheater.
Looking forward, our commitment to nurturing the lives of our young residents continues to expand with great events focused on families. These wonderful events include an educational and fun Earth Day Festival on April 12th. The week after, our annual Royal Egg Hunt on April 19th is sure to be a great opportunity for everyone to get involved outdoors. For those who appreciate live music, the upcoming free Tunes’ N Trucks concert series will light up our outdoor venues on April 25th, May 16th, and June 20th. Each event helps bring our community together for a night of music and dancing, along with a wide array of food truck offerings. Finally, I invite you to observe our Memorial Day Ceremony on May 26th. This solemn event honors the bravery and sacrifices of our service members, and it reminds us of the freedoms we must cherish every day. On behalf of the entire City Commission, let us celebrate this season of growth and renewal together as we continue to make Sunrise the best place to live, work, play, eat, shop and learn.
Michael J. Ryan, Mayor

R ecycling is the process of collecting and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and turning them into new products. That comic book you read could be made from recycled paper. The bench you relax on could be made from recycled plastic. Your brick driveway could be made with recycled glass. Getting the right materials to the recycling process facility means the items could have another useful life. We all play a role in this. In Sunrise, residential homes receive a blue recycling bin that can be placed curbside on neighborhood pickup days. Most people want to recycle as much as possible but get confused about what items the city can send to the recycling facility. Here’s a great refresher on how we can all Recycle Right. In 2024, Sunrise residents recycled more than 5,500 tons of material! Just because something has a recycling symbol does not mean it can be recycled through the City’s curbside recycling program. Entire truckloads of recyclables can be contaminated if the wrong items are placed in bins. Sunrise has a contract with a recycling provider that requires certain materials for processing: • Cardboard, food boxes, paper, magazines, and mail • Clean and empty beverage and food cans • Glass bottles and jars • Plastic bottles and jugs When in Doubt, Throw It Out! Check the Recycle Right webpage for more information at www.sunrisefl.gov/recycling.
ON PAGE 5
We’ve included a handy Recycle Right cut-out , providing easy answers on what to recycle and what not to. We encourage you to cut it out and place it somewhere in your home as an easy refresher.

CITY OF SUNRISE
SECURE YOUR YARD NOW
FOR THIS HURRICANE SEASON
Hurricane season is upon us, and preparing your yard now is key to keeping our community safe. In Sunrise, being proactive means taking action before a storm warning is issued—because when the winds pick up, it's too late to trim trees or clear away hazardous debris. Before severe weather approaches, walk around your property and identify any trees or shrubs that need attention. Overgrown branches or those too close to your home can quickly become dangerous in high winds. It's essential to arrange for certified arborists to trim your trees well in advance of a storm. Waiting too long could put you at risk or create extra work for our emergency crews, as bulk trash collection and disposal sites shut down before bad weather hits. If a storm hits, you may need to survive independently for several days. Prepare now by placing emergency supplies in plastic bins or bags that will keep them dry and portable. A basic emergency kit should contain a three-day supply (at minimum) of water and non-perishable food for each household member, as well as medicines, a first aid kit, personal hygiene items, a radio and flashlights with extra batteries, and copies of important documents. ASSEMBLE AN EMERGENCY KIT Visit www.sunrisefl.gov/hurricane for more details and a comprehensive list!
In addition to trimming trees, remember to bring any loose outdoor items indoors. Patio furniture, grills, bicycles, and garden tools can become airborne projectiles during a storm, posing hazards to property and people. For your safety and the well-being of our community, please dispose of all tree trimmings and yard debris as soon as they're cut - not just before a storm approaches. Keeping your yard clear of materials helps our crews collect them quicker and avoids clogging our storm drains, which are essential during recovery. Keeping your yard clear of hazardous materials is one of the simplest ways to reduce damage and help emergency services move quicker when it matters most. For more detailed guidelines on preparing your yard for hurricane season, visit sunrisefl.gov/hurricane.
