The official launch of the catalyst building, July 2020
Building on its strength of over 40 years’ experience in the ceramics industry, Dewsbury- based Magma Catalysts designs its own catalyst carrier. Its product is unlike other catalyst products and looks different: it is spherical, with a textured ‘golf ball’ like surface. The company is a leading manufacturer and supplier of a wide range of refractory, ceramic and catalyst materials and technology worldwide. Its mission is to grow and develop the business through ongoing innovation, research and development in order to offer an increased product range. When Magma was established in 2010 at the production facility in Dewsbury, its main focus was the refractory industry. However, the management team had experience of selling into the catalyst industry through the former Dyson division. With the hiring of some of the former technical team, Magma began its journey into the development of the catalyst product. Spotting a gap in the market Noticing a lack of innovation in the SMR catalyst market over the past 20 years, and the need for more hydrogen in the world, a gap in the market was identified for a new catalyst that could improve hydrogen production and lower energy costs. Magma’s mission began to develop dynamic new evolutionary textured catalyst technology, creating a product of value and uniqueness within the market by vastly improving efficiency and increasing production of hydrogen.
The company developed a new process, different to anything on the market, based on its expertise of ceramic technology. These catalyst carriers are formed utilising polymer ceramic technology rather than the traditional pressure method. Mark Stuckey, Managing Director of Magma Group, commented: “We are honoured to have been recognised for the Queens Award for Enterprise for Innovation this year. For ten years we have been expanding and growing the business and coming up with innovative new ideas to develop our Catalyst product, and it is great that our hard work and dedication has been recognised. “I would like to thank all of the staff at Magma who have helped to develop the business over the years and advanced the business into what it is today. There have been a lot of exciting
developments at Magma over the years in terms of innovation, expansion of the business and trading worldwide. I’m looking forward to seeing what the next ten years has to offer us, and look forward to flying our Queen’s Award flag with pride for the next five years!” Continued growth Over the past 12 years, Magma has enjoyed continual and significant growth – most recently with the acquisitions of P&E in Huddersfield in 2020 and a merger with UNICAT in 2021. The company has four main areas of business: catalysts, ceramics, combustion and electrical control panels at P&E, and operates worldwide from its facilities in the UK (Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Bolton and The Wirral), Vietnam and the US. Magma is part of the UNICAT Catalyst Group, owned by White Deer Energy. White Deer invests in energy and industrial service and equipment companies and midstream infrastructure. It believes in the importance of environmental, social and governance ‘ESG’ issues, and works closely with portfolio companies to ensure a high standard of care towards ESG issues in its business operations.
