Building Heroes Education Foundation
Established in 2014, Building Heroes is an award-winning military charity dedicated to supporting service leavers,
Building Heroes was conceived to bridge the gap by providing ex-Service personnel rapid transition pathways into construction. Five years ago, it commenced delivery of a single, intensive property maintenance course in conjunction with Chichester College on its Brinsbury site in Pulborough. This was so successful it quickly expanded and now operate 15 training centres across England. It has retrained over 2,000 veterans and service leavers for new careers in the past six years. Brendan Williams, CEO, said: “I am very proud of the entire team at Building Heroes, all of whom work insanely hard to support our country’s service-leavers and veterans. We are so pleased to have received such a prestigious award that recognises our dedication.”
veterans, reservists and military families. It provides training and employment support for a new career in construction by equipping individuals with a broad range of trade skills and connecting them with new employers. Military veterans are more than twice as likely to be unemployed as the civilian population, with an estimated 120,000 veterans currently unemployed, and 15,000 men and women leaving the Forces each year. Some of these will be retiring at the end of a full career, but many are early service leavers or are being medically discharged with either physical or mental health injuries; they are faced with an uncertain future for which they often have no plan. The construction industry is facing a critical and growing skills shortage; there is a requirement to recruit additional workers to fill the gap left by a combination of an ageing
workforce and the UK’s departure from the EU, as investment in the sector helps to drive the economy post Covid-19. There is a natural fit between veterans and construction, with ex-service personnel possessing the personal attributes valued by the industry – reliability, discipline, loyalty, team- working and organisational skills.
