John Lawrie Tubulars Ltd is one of the largest purchasers and suppliers of steel tubular products in the UK, employing around 38 people across its operational bases in Montrose, Scotland and Scunthorpe, England. The company repurposes redundant steel tubulars purchased from the North Sea oil and gas industry as a high quality alternative to new manufactured prime steel products in the construction piling industry. Extending the life of materials through reuse and repurposing is at the core of the John Lawrie Tubulars business with the aim of minimising waste, pollution, water and the consumption of finite resources, improving sustainability, reducing environmental impacts and cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Bespoke life cycle assessment Following the commission in 2020 of a completely bespoke life cycle assessment (LCA) based on its own unique steel tubular management processes, the company can formally detail that for every tonne of its repurposed steel tubulars used there is a carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) saving of 97.21% over the production of newly manufactured prime steel products. The report presents the environmental impact and benefits of the repurposing and onward delivery of John Lawrie Tubulars’ products, comparing the impact of repurposed tubulars to that of newly manufactured prime steel products throughout their lifecycle.

Green credentials The company aims to keep evolving its business offering to make a real difference for its clients, suppliers and of course the environment. Innovation is key to its growth strategy, with management always looking for new ways to meet market and environmental demands. John Lawrie Tubulars’ aim is to minimise waste, pollution and the consumption of finite resources in order to improve sustainability, reduce environmental impacts and help cut greenhouse gas emissions – so to be recognised for its efforts is very satisfying for the company’s leadership team. The company shares its greener credentials with its suppliers and clients, to evidence the carbon emissions saved thanks to using its products and services, and the response has been incredibly positive.

Expansion into the US John Lawrie Tubulars has recently expanded its service in the UK as well as in the USA by investing a seven-figure sum in its operations in Montrose, Scotland and Houston, Texas. Following the purchase of a number of new assets, the company is now perfectly positioned to offer products for construction applications to new and existing clients in the construction, rail and geo-drilling (geothermal and water wells) industries in order to maximise the opportunity for repurposing products that would otherwise go to waste.
