Wates Group
Wates Group is proud to have been awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, Sustainable Development, for the third time, in this its 125th anniversary year. As one of the UK’s leading family-owned construction, residential development and property services companies, it is driven by its purpose of working together to inspire better ways of creating the places, communities and businesses of tomorrow – and by the Wates family ethos that business, done well, is a force for good in society. Its sustainability strategies have bold commitments and targets, which are guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It has set out targets to achieve Zero Waste Carbon from its operations by 2025. It also works to ensure its projects leave a positive impact on the natural environment, partnering with its customers, suppliers and other stakeholders to achieve this. The company is delivering environmentally sustainable projects, including some of UK’s first net-zero schools with the Department for Education, partnering with Arup and HKS to decarbonise the NHS estate in England, and working with Lloyds Banking Group to find energy-efficient innovations through the unique
Wates Innovation Network. Its commitment to leaving a positive legacy in our communities is demonstrated through its longstanding commitment to procurement via social enterprises, which in 2021 amounted to £6.8m. Its five-year social value strategy was launched in 2020 with three central themes: challenging inequality, inspiring and educating young people about careers in the built environment
industry, and supporting and scaling the social enterprise sector. In 2021, it generated social value of £115.9m through its programmes and its work with partner social enterprises, including engaging 12,000 young people. The company also launched ASSETS, a pioneering six-month social enterprise business mentoring programme to support organisations to scale. For Wates, sustainability is about more than a programme or series of interventions. It is intrinsic to the way it does business, the way it operates,
and how it supports, inspires and engages others to achieve sustainable outcomes. WATES GROUP Wates House, Station Approach, Leatherhead, Surrey KT22 7SW Tel: 01372 861000 • info@wates.co.uk www.wates.co.uk Find us on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube
The Wool Packaging Company LtdT/A Woolcool
Founded as The Wool Packaging Company in 2009, Woolcool is a pioneering, second generation family business in Staffordshire that harnesses the properties of natural materials to create environmentally responsible products – and which has been awarded a coveted 2022 Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development. Woolcool has spent almost two decades investing significant time, resource and money in its technology, researching and developing sustainable temperature-controlled packaging products for the food and pharmaceutical markets. Woolcool insulated packaging solutions use a grade of 100% pure sheep’s wool that might otherwise have gone to waste, as an alternative to polluting manmade insulation such as polystyrene. This innovative use of wool – which is recyclable, reusable, renewable, compostable, abundant, and part of the natural carbon cycle, helps avoid tonnes of toxic polystyrene from going into landfill sites across the globe. The honour is the second to be won by the company, which received a Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation in 2018. Managing Director Josie Morris MBE said: “It is a huge honour to receive a second Queen’s Award for Enterprise, this time for Sustainable Development. This prestigious award
helps drive home the message that using natural materials offers a truly sustainable alternative for businesses that want to seriously address the climate challenges we all face.” “Following the challenges of the last two years, this award reflects the hard work

and resilience of the entire Woolcool team, as well as our valued wider family of suppliers, clients, customers and friends.” Customers such as Morrisons, Abel & Cole and Fortnum & Mason use Woolcool to ensure chilled food deliveries arrive in perfect condition, while pharmaceutical and clinical clients Certus, Quantum, Well Pharmacy and Baxter Healthcare trust the firm’s years of R&D with British Universities to deliver life- saving medical supplies within vital temperature ranges. CEO & Founder Angela Morris added: “As a company founded on ecological principles, we are so proud to have achieved the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development. Now, after almost two decades of serious academic research

and design innovation using natural materials, this award acknowledges both the pioneering position we took many years ago and the results we have achieved since.” THE WOOL PACKAGING COMPANY LTD T/A WOOLCOOL Units 1a & 1b Tungsten Park, Opal Way, Stone Business Park, Stone, Staffordshire, ST15 0SS Tel: +44 (0) 1785 262030 • sales@woolcool.com www.woolcool.com @WeAreWoolcool @WeAreWoolcool @wearewoolcool
