H. S. Sunday, October 18.—John 14:23, 24 Showing That We Love Christ 1. By our walk (1 John 2:6). 2. By our obedience (1 John 2:5). We Show Our Love: 3. By our fruits (John 15:4, 5). What Good Comes of Showing Love? I. It shows the difference-between Cod’s followers and the devil’s (1John 3:10) 2. It will lead others to believe (John 17:21). - 3. It will show God’s nature (1 John 4:8). There is nothing that all need to know so much as that God is love. Give Three Chief Reasons for Loving God. 1. How long tie lias loved us (1 John 4:19). 2. How much He has loved us (John 3:16). ' 3. How wonderfully His love has blest us ' (1 John 3:1-3). 1. What Is Leaven? That which causes fermentation. Yeast is leaven. All have Seen it mixed with flour and water into dough, set aside to rise, or ferment;' put into the oven and baked. The heat checks, or kills the leaven; otherwise it would go on fermenting until the lump was sour, then corrupt, unwholesome and fit for the garb age can. Leaven if allowed to ruff-its course spoils whatever it is put into. 2. "Good" Leaven? The Bible uses leaven as a figure or illustration of “bad,” not good. There is no “good” leaven ac cording to the Bible. , It speaks of the leaven of hypocrisy (Luke 12:1) ; of malice and wickedness (1 Cor. 5:8), and forbids its use m worship on God’s altar (Lev. Therefore we should not use the “Good Leaven/’ etc. Jesus’ parable (Matt. 13:33) means that the Church, the woman, would mix error with the truth and practice of the Gospel, which like leaven would spoil her sweet and wholesome influ- Sunday, October 25.—Matt. 13:33 Good- Leaven in Our Lives.

Sunday, October 11.—Matthew 10:38, 39 Our Crosses and What to Do With Them What Is a Cross? Let a Junior tell. Show that Jesus bore such a cross and that it bore Him (John 19:17; Luke 23:26). Bearing a cross is far more than bearing two pieces of wood and being nailed to it. With Jesus it meant shame: To be mocked (Matt. 27:27-31) ; to be counted unable to help Himself (Matt. 27:41, 42) ; to be counted a wrongdoer and not to defend Himself (Luke 23:1, 2; Isa. 53:7, 12) ; to be forsaken of God (Matt. 27:46); and, though Lord of life, to die (Matt. 27:50).: What Is Our Cross? None but Jesus could be crucified for the sins of the world. He alone “bore our sins in His own body on the tree” (1 Petet 2:24). Many have been crucified on a cross of wood for Jesus’ name. Peter him self bore such a cross and was crucified with his head downward, rather than to deny Jesus. We are none of us likely to bear such a cross. But if we are faith ful we shall be called on to keep our tem per when provoked; to hold our mouths when mocked; not to strike back when we are struck; to stand fast for the truth when they say we are wrong; to bless them that persecute us, and say, “Father forgive them” for them that despitefully use us. Crosses are laid on us every day and are heavy to bear. I knew a boy who would not strike back, and the boys struck him and made sport of him, but just for Jesus’ sake he bore it though he could fight fast enough. I read of a little girl whose heathen mother beat her cruelly for going to learn of and worship Jesus, until her mother broke down and went too. What Shall We Do With Our Crosses? Bear them. Do not grow angry; do not strike back; do not yield our purpose to do right and not to do wrong ; and be kind to them who are unkind to us.
