THE KING’S BUSINESS

“Thy nightly visits to my cham ber made, T hat thou m ight’st know me safe and w arm ly laid; Thy morning bounties ere I left my home, The biscuit, or confectionery plum; The frag ran t w aters on my cheeks bestowed By thy own hand, till fresh they shone and glowed! All this, and, more endearing still th an all, Thy constant flow of love th a t knew no fall.” Then our fathers—how they have romped with us, borne us on their shoulders and taken us on trips and bought our toys as well as our needs. We ought to make them happy while we may. 2. How. As none do so much to make us happy, none can' do so much to make them happy. Nothing makes father and mother happy so much as a child that tries to make them happy. By Jjeing obedient, respectful, helpful, patient, heeding their advice, keeping out of mischief, doing well at school, and in everything striving to be and do" what you see pleases’ them, you can make them happy, and that is about the only way to pay for all they have done and will do' for you: Children have it in their power to make father and mother happy or "most unhappy (Prov. 10:1). Most outlive their parents and oh, how sorry they are then to think how thoughtless and grievous they used to be for not thinking of their help and pleasure. 3. What the Heavenly Father Says. In the ten commandments, next to loving our Father in heaven is put the loving of our earthly parents (Exod. 20:12), “Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee,” In Ephesians 6:1, 2, we read that “this is right?’ and is “the first commandment with promise.” When President Garfield took the oath of office, he had his old mother on the stand in the place of honor, and swore to be faithful over his mother’s Bible Sunday, Nov. 8.—1 Cor. 9:22, 23

eiice in the world, as; we see today when there is so much division, false teaching and worldliness, especially in the most of the ■Church which is Roman Catholic and Greek with very little of the true Spirit of Christ and very much error. 3. How Evil Works As Leaven. Plant a thistle seed in a lot and let it alone and the lot will be leavened with thistles, all good plants driven out. Let a bad boy come into .a neighborhood and boys who go with him will become like him, if he lies they will, if he swears they will, the boys will be leavened by his example. Let a boy smoke a cigarette, he will get a taste for tobacco, let him smoke on and he will get the smoke habit—one cigarette has leavened the whole boy. The same principle works, of course, with the girls in their way. It is as with the famous camel, which asked its master to let it warm its nose under the tent cloth i^then got in its head—next its whole body, and the good man was crowded out. The camel had leavened the whole tent. So it is with "sin which "stirs in our hearts; or in the circle where we become a bad influence. The Bible teaching about leaven is that we should put it away lest "it spoil us and we spoil others. Read I Cor. 5 :7, 8. Sunday, Nov. 1.—Prov. 10:1-15 Making Father and Mother Happy. CONSECRATION MEETING 1. Why. We should be as busy mak ing happiness as bees making honey. Our parents should have the first and largest share. Their days are spent in toiling and planning to make us happy. What can you think of in proof of this? When a baby? A tiny boy or girl? Now? What have you that you do not owe to them? The story of Hannah (1 Sam. 1; 2:19) shows how much they love us; of David and Absalom what they would do for us (2 Sam. 18:33) ; of the Prodigal how they forgive us (Luke 15:20, 23, 34). ■ The poet Cowper, looking on his dead mother’s picture tenderly said, what we might all say to our mothers,
