IUJ helped me a lot in my career!

Lin Yuzhu Ernst & Young Strategy and Consulting IDP, Class of 2015

After finishing my bachelor’s degree in China, I came to IUJ in 2013 to pursue my master’s degree in international development. It was such a fulfilling experience! I was able to build up friendships with students across the world and gained skills/knowledge from prominent professors. Although I was lucky enough to receive both Niigata International Association (NIA) Scholarship and JASSO scholarship. To cover my living expenses, I also worked as a part-time library assistant and teaching assistant for several classes.

Like most of the fresh graduates, I struggled between pursuing master’s degree and seeking a job opportunity in China. As you might know, the competition in China’s job market is fierce and I was also not ready. Luckily, I made my life- changing decision to come to IUJ. During my two years at IUJ, I spent most of my energies on my Major (International Development Program) and Japanese study. Being a first-time learner of Japanese, I was able to have simple conversations with locals and passed job interviews in Japanese after spending two years at IUJ.

Outside my academic life, I was also active in the school’s multicultural events and the local tours hosted by Japanese friends.

Next, I would like to share my thoughts about what students care the most - the career after IUJ. IUJ provides robust support for students who are seeking opportunities in Japan, including CV editing, 1 on 1 career consulting and various on-site recruiting events, etc. I got my first job at a listed Japanese manufacturing company through IUJ recruiting events and many of my classmates also got their ideal jobs with the support of IUJ. The job market in Japan is very active recently and the companies value our international background and vision. It might be tough to fit 100% into the Japanese working cultural and there might be some language barriers. But if you are looking to expand your network globally and look for exciting opportunities in Japan, IUJ is the best place that can provide you with all support.

Last but not least, I would like to say “IUJ might be far from Tokyo, but it is definitely closer to the World”.

How your study and life at IUJ help you develop your career

My experience at IUJ has proved to be one of the most productive and exciting periods of my life. Not only did I expand my knowledge and skills that I can leverage in the business world, but I also made life-long friends from all around the world. The study environment is unique, located in the stunning Japanese countryside while attracting a very diverse cohort of people from different backgrounds. I chose IUJ for the opportunity to study at one of Japan’s most prestigious MBA programs with a scholarship. I received a scholarship from MEXT for the whole duration of my two-year study. Through my classes in the Japan-Global Development MBA Program I developed a good foundation in business through courses, such as strategy and accounting, as well as I learned about the unique aspect of Japanese corporations and management styles. As an employee of a Japanese company, the academic courses have benefitted me greatly to better understand my working environment. The graduate school offers a host of extracurricular activities students can pursue. You have the opportunity to a make positive contribution to students’ life through elected organizations, for example, the International Relations Council, or the International Management Council. I was an elected member of the IM Council, where I organized events for students such as the Alumni Career-Talk, helping students navigate their career development after business school. This experience helped me improve leadership, coordination and communication skills which I find useful in my current role as a project manager. For career-focused students like myself, IUJ provides plenty of resources to build your ideal path after graduation. The career office is there to help you pursue your goals, draft your job applications and prepare for interviews, but of course it is important to put much effort in job-hunting if you want to see results.

I currently work at Mitsubishi Fuso as a project manager, leading efforts to transform the sales process of a traditional Japanese company. I believe that IUJ has supported me in getting me here and has also equipped me with the skills to grow in my career.

At the same time, this period provides a rare opportunity for small-to medium-sized companies to narrow the gap with larger competitors. After nearly 20 years of offering its globally top-ranked e-Business Management Program, GSIM launched a new Digital Transformation Program (DXP) in 2021. It nurtures future leaders who can lead a global business in a digital society by integrating digital technologies and management skills. Instructors in the DXP are faculties familiar with cutting-edge digital technologies, invited industrial practitioners, and guest speakers from across the world. The pedagogy includes case methods, simulations, and team projects. Our graduates gain hands-on experience with new digital technologies (e.g., data science, Big Data, AI, blockchain, cloud computing, cybersecurity). They also learn digital business models, entrepreneurship, digital strategies, organizational design for digital transformation, FinTech, digital marketing, and more. There is high demand for new hires with knowledge of digital transformation. Career paths for graduates include managers in IT departments, managers in charge of implementing digital transformations, IT specialists who consult on technology projects, and entrepreneurs who start tech businesses.

DXP Feature

The most interesting feature of DXP delivery at IUJ is that I found it to be practical in its delivery, utilizing cases taken from the real world. Entrepreneurship in the digital era; opportunities and challenges for emerging economies; A case of Ethiopia. Data Analysis with Python (Assoc. Prof. Hongwei Chuang) Python is being used by many programmers around the world for coding. It is the closest coding language for humans, and hence, it is easy to learn. It is also popular with AI & ML design which is set to transform the way we live and work. In addition, we are seeing its impact on such areas as education, work, health, construction. In general, Python is transforming ''cloud capital'' in a significant manner.

GSIM Faculty Profiles

The Japan-Global Development Program (JGDP) is a program jointly implemented and managed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the International University of Japan as part of the JICA Development Studies Program (JICA-DSP). It aims to provide an opportunity to learn universal development and growth logic across the fields of politics, economics, and management, using Japan's experiences in economic development and corporate growth as basic case materials. The JGDP is an international human resource development program introduced by IUJ as the first joint program between GSIR and GSIM. Its outstanding characteristics are: 1. International students learn logic and lessons in development from Japan’s experiences (both successes and failures) and acquire knowledge and skills to consider developing strategies for their homelands. 2. Japanese students develop the ability to explain the logic of Japanese development in English by learning about Japan's experiences. With that skill, they are able to communicate their knowledge with the world. 3. Students who will work in the international arena in the future learn the universal logic of economic development and corporate growth using Japan’s experiences as case materials. The JGDP is not intended to be a program that trains Japanese specialists. Instead, the logic and lessons from Japan’s experiences will help future leaders from abroad as they think about strategies for development back home. Thus, the logic behind Japan’s experiences can be applied to various global scenarios. That is why we call this program the Japan-Global Development Program. It enables Japanese students to explain their country’s development logically when they go abroad and helps them play an active role as global leaders. Depending on the students’ wishes, they can select an area of concentration from those presented in the following table and choose the school to which they want to belong. As such, those who choose “Foreign Policy” , “Development Policy” , “Economic Policy” , or “Public Management” are part of GSIR , and those who choose “Management” become a member of GSIM . Degrees awarded for the respective concentrations : Concentration (GSIR) Degree Name Concentration (GSIM) Degree Name Foreign Policy MA in International Relations Management Master of Business Administration Development Policy MA in International Development Economic Policy MA in Economics Public Management MA in Public Management Curriculum All JGDP courses emphasize both theoretical background and international comparison. JGDP courses offered by GSIR cover various fields, from the international political and economic environment after Japan's Meiji Restoration to Japan’s education system, the characteristics of Japan’s postwar economic growth, Japan’s foreign policy, politics, national security policy, and foreign assistance policy. JGDP courses offered by GSIM provide education on Japanese style management, corporate finance, and Japan’s financial system, Japan’s major industries, human resource practices, manufacturing management, industrial policy, business leaders, and development of SMEs. Degree Requirements The requirements for completing the JGDP are 1) two years of enrollment, 2) acquisition of at least 40 credits, 3) submission of a master’s thesis or research report after receiving the necessary research guidance, and 4) passing the thesis/research report evaluation and final examination.
