Hola Sober July

The design of the trailer, the logo and the website allowed me to be creative in ways I hadn’t been before and now I get to meet people from my community. I’m in love! In the past, when people came by and ordered the American Dream and said “thanks for having an alternative” I assumed they were referencing my sign and that they were happy to have an alternative to a highly sugared drink. As I began to follow the AF community, however, I noticed the word “alternative” time and time again. With that in mind, when the next customer, looked at my menu and said “wow, it’s nice to have alternatives” I asked him to elaborate, and he said he was happy to have an alternative to beer. He ordered the Cool Clementine and left me thinking…

Losing my family was too high a price to pay and that day, I was able to put down the wine glass for good. Lindsay’s words sparked my road to recovery and to discovering my life’s passion – helping others to love a life without alcohol. Together, we are rebranding sobriety. We are breaking the rules by not drinking. We are a BIG deal. Next stop for Sober in the City? Austin, Texas in November. I didn’t know it then, but I know it now; I am an alternative to alcohol.

I feel extra special knowing I can create drinks that appeal to those who are looking for alcohol-free alternatives.

Even so, when I sit down and create drinks, I don’t necessarily think “oh if you’re alcohol free, you’ll love this”. What I really think is “oh I can’t wait for you try this!” And “you” is anyone who appreciates a good drink.” Lisa Ferrante, who provided the DJ services (DJ Lisa’s Weddings and Events) had this to say about her Sober in the City experience: “I can tell you, that I’ve deejayed many events where alcohol turned a special event into a drunk fest with embarrassing moments and lost memories. Being at this event where alcohol was not an invited guest, allowed people to be present, and engaged with no worries of driving home. Alcohol was not missed.

I love to people watch and witnessing people leave with grace was priceless. You can truly have just as much fun!”

As for this sober gal, I was so proud and humbled to tell my story and share my book, This Side of Alcohol. The absolute highlight of the night for me was that my daughter, Lindsay attended the event and was able to hear and see how her words she said to me three years ago on July 12, 2019 saved my life and the trajectory of it: “Mom, you need to do something about your drinking or you cannot have the relationship you want with me, Jason and the kids.”
