THE MIDWICH CUCKOOS - SKY MAX ON DEMAND

The Midwich Cuckoos is a sci-fi drama on Sky, which is based on the book with the same name by John Wyndham. The story begins when everyone in the village is rendered unconscious during a power cut. On awakening all the women in the village of childbearing age are pregnant. The government intervenes and supports the families in bringing up the children, both financially and emotionally. It quickly becomes apparent that the children are not human as they age very quickly, and they all seem to share the same mind. The parents go from initial love of the children to terror and fear of what the children are. Acting is a bit patchy in parts and if you are familiar with the earlier film versions of the book (The Village of the Dammed) you will find this version very different. It’s a fun watch and has a great twist at the end.

Keep sweet, is the Netflix documentary about the infamous Fundamentalist Church of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), which was headed by the teachings of the ‘prophet’ Warren Jeffs. This is both a horrifying and intriguing watch. Led by Warren Jeffs the church practiced polygamy. Men would often have many wives and many children. Warren Jeffs also introduced and arranged the practice of young girls marrying much older men. Women within the church were victims of extreme subjugation. Which makes the women who spoke out even more admirable. This is not an easy watch and I feel I should add a trigger warning for child and sexual abuse. I do, however, feel that this is a fascinating study of what happens when humans blindly follow one person without question. WATCH Keep Sweet on NETFLIX here
