A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

We invite you to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a weekend of arts and culture on January 18th and 19th at the Sunrise Civic Center. This inspiring event lineup offers something for everyone and is a meaningful way to honor the values of unity and equality. For pet lovers, Woofstock is back! Join us on February 1st at Welleby Park to celebrate our four-legged friends with activities, vendors, and more. Another fun and energizing event that’s back for 2025 is Sunrise Comic Con on March 15th at the Sunrise Civic Center! West Broward’s first and largest pop culture festival will offer a day full of exciting fan experiences, artist panels, entertainment, and the fan-favorite cosplay competition. Finally, mark your calendars for Taste of Sunrise on March 20th at the Sunrise Civic Center. This event is a feast for the senses, showcasing the diverse culinary talents in our community. While you’re out and about, don’t forget to pick up your free 2025 calendar featuring chess-themed artwork created by our talented local students. Calendars are available at City Hall and the Sunrise Civic Center. On behalf of my colleagues on the Sunrise City Commission and the entire City of Sunrise family, I wish you and your loved ones a 2025 filled with health, happiness, and prosperity. Thank you for being part of what makes Sunrise so special.

As we welcome 2025, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the past year and look forward to all that lies ahead for our vibrant Sunrise community. In 2024, we made tremendous strides in continuing to transform our parks. On our municipal campus, for instance, we are excited about our expanded outdoor amphitheater which will be capable of hosting exhilarating programming on the great lawn. When combined with our new 500+ space parking garage to provide better customer service at City Hall and for our wonderful events at the adjacent amphitheater and Civic Center, our municipal campus will be an even more dynamic destination for residents and visitors. Our City’s commitment to compassion and empathy has never been stronger. Sunrise once again demonstrated its heart with the distribution of seasonal baskets for families in need throughout the season. This past year, hundreds of Thanksgiving baskets and Winter holiday toys brought joy to households across our community, thanks to the generosity and hard work of volunteers and staff. But, we are also there throughout the year to assist with our Compassion Center staff. As we embrace the New Year, we’re excited to invite you to an array of upcoming events that highlight the best of Sunrise. The Tunes ‘N Trucks Free Concert Series returns, bringing great music and delicious food to your favorite parks. Rock out on January 10th at Sunrise Sportsplex, groove to Disco and Funk on February 21st at City Park, and enjoy Country favorites on March 21st at Flamingo Park.

Warm regards,

Michael J. Ryan, Mayor

South Florida Blossoms in Winter

P eople spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, according to a study by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Screen time is at an all-time high— with Americans spending just over seven hours a day looking at computers and mobile devices. During the summer, it’s easier to make the case for staying inside and online. Now that we have cool, refreshing weather—with lower humidity and fewer pests—it’s the perfect time to go outdoors. Notice that the Oak trees are flowering and beginning to develop fruit and seeds. Watch for the red tubular blooms of Coral Honey Suckle and Firebush, both of which are loved by hummingbirds. Dazzle in the display of blossoms that burst forth ahead of the leaves of the Tabebuia trees. Our South Florida weather couldn’t be better! Let’s go outside and see what’s blooming.

Flowering plants are of special importance to our native pollinators, sustaining them when little else is in bloom.

Embrace the new year! Take the time to enjoy these refreshing winter temperatures, by getting out under the open sky and planting for tomorrow so you’ll have beautiful blooms to enjoy next year and beyond.
