A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
As we near the end of 2024, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible sense of community that has blossomed in our City this year. From generous and kind-hearted neighbors helping one another to shared celebrations of our accomplishments, Sunrise has truly shined as a place of unity, compassion, and empathy. The year began with the exciting Grand Opening of our new City Hall in January, marking the first step in transforming our municipal campus. Since then, we’ve made great progress on the construction of a 500- space parking garage and an expanded outdoor events amphitheater—both of which will enhance our ability to host more dynamic community gatherings that will bring the entire City together in the future. Our compassion as a City continues to show through initiatives like food distribution events, ensuring that families in need receive essential supplies. Our efforts to assemble seasonal baskets for both Thanksgiving and the Winter holiday season demonstrate our ongoing commitment to supporting our neighbors in times of need throughout the year. We also demonstrate our devotion and respect through the recent opening of Veterans Park, a space dedicated to honoring the heroes who selflessly served our great Country. Please save the date to join us for the Grand Opening Celebration on October 5th in commemoration of this highly anticipated new park and its Memorial Monument.
I’m certain that Sunrise sports fan share my excitement as we all eagerly await the next chapter of our hometown Florida Panthers’ historic Stanley Cup-winning season. Let’s rally around our hometown team leading up to their October 8th home opener at Amerant Bank Arena, where they’ll raise the championship banner and seek another legendary season! Our fall calendar is packed with fun events for all ages, starting with the return of the Tunes ‘N Trucks concert series on October 18th, featuring a Latin music performance and food trucks in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Get into the Halloween spirit with costumed events like our Trick or Trot 5K and Kids’ Dash on October 19th and the beloved Boo Bash trick-or- treating exclusively for Sunrise residents on October 26th. As autumn winds down, experience the vibrant music and dance of our Cultural Festival on November 9th. To close out 2024, don’t miss our joy-filled Light Up the Holidays event on December 5th and the Arts & Crafts Festival featuring Winter Wonderland on December 14th. On behalf of the entire City Commission, I send warm wishes to you and your family for a safe and festive holiday season. Even as the sun will soon set on 2024, the brightness and warmth on the horizon for 2025 is ever- more radiant in Sunrise!
Warm regards,
Michael J. Ryan, Mayor
Sunrise’s newest green space, Veterans Park , honors the courageous veterans from all branches of the United States military who so honorably defended the freedoms that we enjoy. The park’s central plaza features an inlaid star and a Memorial Monument with flags for each military service branch. Additional amenities include a meditation labyrinth intended as a space for reflection, beautifully-landscaped walking paths, a remembrance pavilion, a playground for children of all ages and abilities, and a restroom facility. The park also has dedicated parking spaces exclusively for combat-wounded veterans. Veterans Park opened to the public on August 30th and was made possible by voter support of the City’s 2014 general obligation (GO) bond referendum—which has funded improvements to parks and recreation facilities in neighborhoods citywide. Join us for our Veterans Park Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, October 5th, beginning at 9:00 am. This momentous event will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony with distinguished guest speakers at 10:00 am, as well as giveaways and a barbecue lunch.
Veterans Park, located at 5400 North Nob Hill Road, is open daily from 8:00 am to 7:30 pm.

Harvest Fruit Year-Round in Your Sunrise Yard G rowing fruit is an interesting and rewarding hobby, and fruit trees are an attractive addition to many landscapes. Since different plants yield fruit at different times, with proper planning you could harvest fruit from your yard all year! The time to plant fruit trees is always now! Selecting a Tree Here in Sunrise, we’re fortunate that we can grow a variety of fruits. For best results, look for subtropical and tropical plants—including those that do well in USDA Hardiness Zone 11. Fruit trees that are not adapted to local conditions will generally fail to produce regardless of how much care and attention they receive. Start with one of these easy-to-grow, low maintenance varieties:
Mango Tree
Learn More at Our Workshop!
• Atemoya – This medium-sized tree is a hybrid the of the sugar apple and the cherimoya, with fruit that’s slightly sweet and a little tart. The Geffner variety is self-pollinating, fast growing and sheds its leaves each year.
The City of Sunrise Utilities Department is hosting a FREE Good and Green workshop where you can learn the basics and improve your confidence in planting and nurturing fruit trees. Saturday, November 2 10:00 am to 11:30 am JOIN US! Sunrise Senior Center – Multipurpose Room 10650 W. Oakland Park Boulevard To register for the workshop, email sustainability@sunrisefl.gov or call (954) 888-6043.
• Loquat – This medium-sized tree produces attractive, fragrant flowers in wintertime, followed by fruit. “Less is best” when it comes to fertilizer.
• Mango – There are many cultivars of this large, fast-growing tree; for smaller spaces, look for dwarf varieties. Mango trees should be planted in well-drained soil so water doesn’t pool around the trunk.
Picking a Location Most fruit trees need full sun to thrive. The area you choose should accommodate a tree canopy that’s at least 12 feet in diameter, and not hold water after a heavy rain. Be sure to call 8-1-1 (or visit sunshine811.com) two full days before you dig; any underground utilities will be located and marked at no cost—and you’ll avoid damaging buried lines. Planting Your Fruit Tree
Get a FRUIT TREE for FREE!
The most important factor is planting the tree to the correct depth—not too deep or too shallow. Fruit trees should also be planted as soon as possible after the trees are purchased or acquired; leaving it in the container can cause the tree to become root bound and cause health issues. You can plant fruit trees all year in south Florida; however, planting during the rainy season (late May to late October) helps a new, young tree get established without daily watering.
Come to the Cultural Festival to take part in our next fruit tree giveaway! Fruit trees will be available for pickup in person by City of Sunrise residents only (photo ID required; one tree per household) while supplies last.
Caring for Your Fruit Tree Protect your new tree with a donut-shaped mulch barrier that encircles—but doesn’t touch—its trunk. Plan on watering your new tree regularly for at least six weeks after planting. Three years after you’ve planted your fruit tree you can begin to trim it annually, waiting until just after you pick the last fruit of the season. If you need to fertilize, choose a slow-release formula and apply it annually during the dry season (January/February). Fruit trees don’t just provide fruit for you and your family; they also add value to your property, help increase our community’s tree canopy, and provide an excellent habitat and food source for birds, bees, and other pollinators.
Saturday, November 9 Beginning at 5:00 pm City Park, 6600 Sunset Strip
