European Carton Industry Reduces Carbon Footprint Pro Carton, the European association for carton and cartonboard manufacturers, said the industry has succeeded in reducing its carbon footprint by 24 percent since 2018. The newly measured European industry average carbon footprint of cartons is now at 249 kgCO2e cradle-to-grave and 148 kg CO2e cradle-to-gate per tonne of cartons. The Carbon Footprint of Carton Packaging 2023 study, carried out by RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden) Bioeconomy and Health Unit for Pro Car- ton tracked both the cradle-to-grave and cradle-to- gate carbon impact of cartonboard from January to December 2021. Double-Digit Reduction It took into account fossil and biogenic green- house gas (GHG) emissions and removals, plus emissions from direct land use change (dLUC). Pro Carton said the double-digit reduction of the cradle-to-grave carbon footprint to 249kg C02, and the cradle-to-gate carbon impact of 148kg C02 equivalents per tons of cartons have been achieved by improving resource efficiency during the con- verting process. It has also been bolstered by significant invest- ments in energy efficiency and renewable energy sources at the cartonboard mills and converting op- erations since carbon emissions were last measured in 2018. Smurfit Kappa Invests In Sustainability Initiative Smurfit Kappa is investing €27 million in a new waste management and recovery facility at its Nerv- ión paper mill in Iurreta, Spain. The investment will see the mill adopt a fully circular production process involving the biggest landfill reduction project Smurfit Kappa has under- taken to date to support the delivery of its 2025 sustainability commitments. The project will have a positive impact on the mill’s carbon footprint by diverting 75,000 tons of waste from landfill and eliminating approximately 450,000 km per year in road transport. The initiative has been developed in a collabora- tive process between Smurfit Kappa Nervión and several technology firms. The project is nearing completion and the plant expected to be fully operational later in the year.
