Objects: A compass, a cardboard cross and a heavy tin cross a little larg er than the cardboard cross. (Cover the cardboard with white paper and paint the tin black.) Lesson: What is this I hold in my hand? I hear someone say, “ A compass.” What is its use? “To tell directions.” This compass reminds me of Thomas. There was a time when referring to Jesus he said, “ Let us also go, that we may die with him” (John 11:16). He is seldom remembered as the one who made this loyalty statement. Compasses, like people, do not always continue to point in the right direction. As I place this black cross near the compass the needle is changed from its original position. Thomas was changed by the cross, because he did not under stand the purpose of Christ’s death. After the resurrection, in John 20:24, 25, we read, “ But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. The other dis ciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my fingers into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

Objects: A potted plant, and three pieces of small wire, each about two feet long. (Remove one branch from the plant several hours before the lesson, to allow time for it to wilt, or heat it in a slow oven. Stick the wilted branch in among the other branches before beginning the lesson. Shape one of the pieces of wire to spell “ CHURCH,” another “ COM MUNION,” and the third “ BAPTISM.” )

Lesson: In looking at this plant, we notice there is something wrong with it. Bill, what seems to be the matter? “ One of the branches looks dead.” You are right. It has no connection with the plant. We are reminded of the words of the Lord Jesus in John 15:4, “ Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.” We would not expect this branch to live unless it were joined to the plant. Now we will try wiring the branch to the plant, and see whether it looks any different. Here is a wire, which spells “ CHURCH.” I will fasten the branch to the plant with this wire. It is still wilted. All Christians should be mem bers of some church, but the joining of a church organization does not cause a dead sinner to be joined to Christ in living faith. The other wire spells “ COMMUN ION.” The Lord’s Supper is a sacred service, but it cannot unite a person with Christ. It is for those who have already been joined to Christ by faith. The branch is still wilted. The third wire spells “ BAPTISM.” Christ commanded His disciples to go into all the world with the gospel and to baptize those who believed. Their being in Christ as Saviour saved them, and not their being baptized. All three wires cannot restore life to the wilted branch. Even so, nothing but faith in Christ as Saviour brings life to dead sinners.

We will let this black fall from the cross, leaving a white cross, to show what happened to Thomas when he real ized that Christ was alive. When Christ again appeared to His disciples, Thomas was with them. “ Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and be hold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God” (John 20:27, 28). As the white cross is placed near the compass it no longer causes the needle to change. The resurrection of Christ was the cure for Thomas’ doubts. Doubts go out for those who believe in a risen Christ.
