Do you remember where you were on April 4, 2016?
restore the team’s status as a perennial powerhouse, I was with him every step of the way. It wasn’t an overnight success, but when we reached the Elite 8 in 2006, it was clear that big things were on the horizon.
I’m guessing that date doesn’t mean a whole lot to most of the folks reading this article. But for a few of you, myself included, it is a day you’ll never forget. On that day, the VillanovaWildcats, my alma mater, won their first Men’s Basketball Championship Game since 1985. It may technically have happened in April, but it’s easily my favorite March Madness moment of all time. Nova’s previous heyday occurred right around the time I was an undergraduate. If memory serves me right, the Cats were marching through the bracket toward their first title when I first stepped foot on campus. I wasn’t even a student yet, but I’m sure school officials were more than happy to tour prospective students during the program’s halcyon days. The sense of school spirit was overwhelming. Looking back, it’s impossible to knowwhether that beneficial timing influenced where I chose to go to school, though I think it’s safe to say it didn’t hurt. Some of my fondest collegiate memories involve the basketball program. Coach Rollie Massimino, a living legend at the time, would eat in the very same dining hall as the lowly students. At first, you couldn’t help but stop and stare. After a while, it became routine. I also learned very quickly that the HolyWar — the nickname for the rivalry between Villanova and St. Joe’s — is no joke. Everyone told me it was an atmosphere unlike any other, but I didn’t realize how serious it was until I saw it in person. Even as somebody who grew up in Philly, a place with no shortage of feverish fandom, there was a level of intensity in those student sections I hadn’t previously experienced. Of course, they were a heck of a lot of fun too.

Which brings us back to April 4, 2016. Nova made it to the National Championship Game for the first time since coach Massimino. Facing a highly touted North Carolina team in the finals, I truly did not knowwhat to expect. The game itself was a nail-biter. With 4.7 seconds remaining in regulation, N.C.’s Marcus Paige hit an insane three-pointer to tie the game. At that point, overtime looked the likeliest outcome. Then came the pivotal moment. Nova brought the ball up the court. It came to Kris Jenkins, who hoisted up a three as time expired. As the buzzer sounded, the ball went through the rim, winning the Cats the title in the most dramatic fashion. In that moment, I felt everything a sports fan ever hopes to experience. If that’s the best moment Nova basketball ever gives me, it will be more than enough. I hope everyone enjoys March Madness this year, no matter who you root for. But if you happen to root for Villanova, I hope you enjoy it more than everyone else!

The Right Way to Donate After Spring-Cleaning

Spring is in the air, and it’s time to celebrate with another round of spring-cleaning. Banish the clutter and make room in your life for something new! Many charities see a sharp increase in donations as spring-cleaning season starts. Donating your used books, kids’ toys, and gently worn clothing allows your old items to have a second life. However, when filling that donation box, make sure you’re donating each item because it can do good and not just because you feel bad about throwing it away. Charities have a big problem with well-meaning citizens dropping off items that are better left in the trash. There are many items charities simply cannot handle. Most charities will have lists of items they can and cannot accept on their websites. Some items that you should not donate include:

Tangled cords or phone chargers
•
Any broken, damaged, or dirty items
These items may be unsafe to sell, costly to ship, or impossible to refurbish effectively. When a charity regularly receives items they cannot use, they have to spend hours of manpower sorting through things that end up in the trash anyway. This process can be expensive for organizations with already-strained resources. Some local charities spend over $1,000 a year on dumpster and trash removal fees for unusable donations. to make your spring-cleaning eco-friendly, even for items you can’t donate. For example, if you have torn or stained blue jeans, reach out to Blue Jeans Go Green. This program keeps denim out of landfills by turning it into insulation. And while Goodwill can’t take your batteries or old flip phone, you can check out Call2Recycle.org to learn how to safely recycle your e-waste. While charities will have no choice but to throw unusable donations in the trash, there are services you can use

• Old TVs • Cribs • Loose remote controls • Personal care items, like soap, shampoo, or makeup • Mattresses
Your donations can be a big help to local charities. Just don’t “donate” your garbage.

If you’re throwing an Oscars party, serving some tasty dishes is a must. But why not kick it up a notch and keep your entrees and hors d’oeuvres in line with the blockbuster theme? There are multiple recipes for Oscars-party popcorn online, and you can also use star-shaped cookie cutters for your desserts. For your libations, you can serve cocktails from famous films and make a martini even James Bond would approve of.

1/3 cup canola oil
•
2 tablespoons flaky sea salt
•
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
•
1 teaspoon black sesame seeds
•
2 teaspoons white sesame seeds

2 teaspoons granulated garlic

1. In a small skillet over medium heat, toast sesame seeds. Shake skillet often and cook until white seeds are golden and fragrant, about 2 minutes. Transfer to a small bowl and add garlic, onion, and salt. 2. In a large saucepan, combine popcorn kernels and oil. Cook over medium-high heat, covered, until popcorn kernels start to pop. Once popping, continue cooking and shaking the pan intermittently until popping ceases, about 3–5 minutes. 3. Transfer popcorn to a large mixing bowl. Pour in butter and toss to coat. Finally, add seasoning, toss again, and serve.

When photography emerged in the late 19th century, its purpose was largely to replace the role of painting. Family portraits started being produced by a newfangled contraption: the camera. In the 1920s, artists began to see the potential for photography as an independent artistic medium. Works from titans like Edward Weston and Walker Evans are included in this exhibition, which explores the era when photography came into its own.
STEPHEN ANTONAKOS: THE ROOM CHAPEL Through Sept. 15
An immersive light sculpture that delights everyone from curious children to seasoned gallery goers, “The Room Chapel” takes inspiration from rural Greek churches and creates something utterly unique. The warm glow of neon bathes visitors, producing a wonderfully disorienting effect. Due to its precise architectural specifications, “The Room Chapel” hasn’t been recreated since its 1996 debut in Boston. Catch it while you can, because once it’s gone, you may never have the chance to see it again.
