Almost all of them brought along cardboard boxes turned into temporary nesting boxes, the corners and &aps all taped down tight, with just a square or rectangular hole cut out of one side and wired over for viewing. Inside looking out at all the humans wan- dering by were all types of small domestic birds from Chanteclair roosters to golden pheasants. A number of boxes also contained an assortment of rabbits, from Flanders to Flamish breeds. Breeding birds on the scale practised by Bouchard and other enthusiasts is a hobby that can also have practical spino$s in terms of helping maintain the avian genetic pool. “Us breeders, we breed birds to help save some species,” Bouchard said, “like phea-

Lots of birds. !e "rst weekend of October, bird fanciers and breeders fromall over Prescott and Rus- sell counties and a few communities beyond gathered at the Ronald Lalonde Community Centre for what Claude Bouchard of the Eastern Ontario Avarian Association (EOAA) hopes will become a regular twice-annual series of local bird auctions. “What we are trying to do is help to pro- mote proper birdraising,” Bouchard said, “and how fun it is.” Bouchard, who has his own bird breeding operation at his farm called Le Volarium, explained the purpose of the association in between directing volunteers and mem- bers about setting up the homebuilt display

He got into bird breeding when his daughter asked him for stories about his childhood. “I would remember the times when I would go fetch the eggs with my father,” he

said. “So my daughter, she said she wished she could have her own chickens too.” Now at Le Volarium, there are chickens, pheasants, pigeons, quail, doves, and pea- cocks. Almost all of Bouchard’s free time, when not with his family or at work, is occu- pied with caring for his birds. “I don’t watch T.V.,” he said, smiling. “I like looking after my birds. It’s an escape. It’s very zen.”
