My Stoic Blueprint for National Get Up Day THE ART OF GETTING BACK UP Feb. 1 is National Get Up Day, a holiday dedicated to reminding us that while life has its ups and downs, it’s important to get back up when we fall. As someone who’s had a business for almost 20 years, there have been a lot of times when it’s been a roller coaster of ups and downs. Since opening my firm, I’ve lost both of my parents and have suffered other personal challenges as well. But, while those things certainly take an emotional toll, it doesn’t mean the business — or the world — stops. You have to keep moving forward. Throughout these moments of hardship, I’ve found comfort and guidance in the principles of stoic philosophy, which teaches us to focus only on the things we can control: our thoughts, emotions, and actions. We should accept things we cannot control, such as the actions of others or the natural course of events happening in the world around us. This helps us stay calm and centered during challenging situations. This philosophy has been particularly helpful to me, and I’ve learned a lot about it from reading Ryan Holiday’s book, “The Obstacle is the Way.” This book resonated with me because its philosophy built upon what I learned while wrestling in school. Despite the many challenges I experienced in the sport, it taught me to persevere and never give up. And this invaluable lesson is not only applicable to sports but also to life’s challenges as well. It’s about adopting an “Okay, and now what?” mentality — acknowledging the obstacles while focusing on what can be done today to overcome them.

FEB/MAR 2024

Just like a wrestler on the mat, our strength lies not just in avoiding falls but in getting back up — again and again.”

This stoic mindset is particularly important for those I represent, especially first-time offenders grappling with the aftermath of an arrest. While it’s not uncommon for them to feel like everything is falling apart, it’s imperative that they remember that this is just one part of their life journey. When I meet clients experiencing defeated feelings of being knocked down by life, I often share with them the stoic philosophy: we can’t control everything that happens to us, but we can control how we react to it.

Another example I always like to give is this: imagine you’re wearing a new suit, and just as you’re about to step out of the house, a bird poops on it. You might feel outraged and

frustrated, but getting angry won’t change the fact that your new suit is now dirty. The idea of stoicism is to learn to adapt to situations like this, find humor in life’s little mishaps, and focus on what you can do to move forward. Instead of getting worked up about things you can’t control, try to stay calm, find a solution, and move on.

So, on this National Get Up Day, I encourage you to try and take a more stoic approach to the lows in your life and maybe even grab your own copy of “The Obstacle Is the Way” by Ryan Holiday.

Finally, I’d like to leave you with one reminder: just like a wrestler on the mat, our strength lies not just in avoiding falls but in getting back up — again and again.

According to Florida Law, there are certain conditions under which chemical or physical breath tests are to be administered to test for alcohol. It is typically up to law enforcement to decide which tests are best based on the situation’s specifics. What Happens if You Refuse to Take a Blood Alcohol Test in Florida? Childhood Development Through Travel

YOUNG EXPLORERS How Travel Shapes Child Development

Cultural Empathy and Adaptability Travel exposes young minds to different cultures and environments, fostering empathy and adaptability. A global education specialist, Dr. Robin Hancock, explains that children who travel from an early age learn to appreciate cultural differences and are more likely to develop meaningful relationships across diverse backgrounds. This early exposure lays a strong foundation for them to grow into well- rounded, globally aware adults. Language Development Beyond cultural understanding, travel significantly impacts linguistic development. Associate Professor Erika Levy from Columbia University notes that surrounding children with various language sounds helps maintain their ability to distinguish and learn different languages. This exposure is particularly beneficial in the first few years of life when brain development is most rapid. Experiences That Shape Perspectives The experiences children gain from travel go beyond just forming memories. They shape their

perspectives and understanding of the world. Every element of the trip contributes to a child’s learning, from trying new foods to adapting to different climates and customs. Even if they don’t remember every detail, the skills and insights gained during their formative years stay with them for life.

Introducing children to domestic and international travel at a young age can significantly aid their development. Surprisingly, traveling with children as young as 6 months old can be remarkably beneficial. It instills a sense of curiosity and openness to new experiences. In addition, child development research shows that travel broadens a child’s horizons and plays a pivotal role in their cognitive and emotional growth in several ways.

Incorporating Travel Into Early Learning

Implementing travel as a part of a child’s early learning can be as simple as exploring local neighborhoods, engaging with different cultures, or creating travel-related traditions. These experiences don’t have to be grand — even small trips offer valuable learning opportunities. Travel is more than just a leisure activity for children; it is an invaluable educational tool. By embracing the joys of travel, parents can help develop their children’s cognitive, linguistic, and emotional skills. Whether a local adventure or an international expedition, every journey becomes a stepping stone in a child’s path to a richer, more interconnected future.
