CARNAVAL PUTLECO
The Putleco Carnival: A Celebration of Tradition and Joy in Putla Villa de Guerrero
The Putleco Carnival is one of the most emblematic festivities of Putla Villa de Guerrero, Oaxaca. This event, celebrated annually before Lent, is a vibrant blend of culture, music, dance, and color that attracts both locals and visitors from various parts of the country.
The Putleco Carnival has its roots in the indigenous and mestizo traditions of the region. It is considered a manifestation of the cultural identity of the Mixtec, Triqui, Amuzgo, and Mestizo peoples who inhabit this area. Its celebration is a way of welcoming the Lenten season with joy and enthusiasm. One of the most representative aspects of the Putleco Carnival is the presence of the traditional Tiliches, masked characters dressed in rags who parade through the streets dancing to the rhythm of brass band music. The Tiliches, also known as "the old ones of the carnival," symbolize the festive spirit of the town and the need to leave behind the old to make way for the new.
In addition to the Tiliches, the carnival includes parades, live music, and gastronomic events where visitors can enjoy typical regional dishes such as chilate with bolillo, barbacoa, and tlayudas.
Among the most notable comparsas (dance troupes) of the Putleco Carnival are: Comparsa Copala: Characterized by its vibrant music and traditional dances, this comparsa is one of the most outstanding of the carnival. Mascaritas or Danza del Macho: This dance is a satire of the ballroom dances of the era of Maximilian of Habsburg, where participants, dressed in feminine attire and masks, imitate and parody the upper class. Comparsa de los Viejos: Represented by the Tiliches, masked characters dressed in rags who parade through the streets dancing to the rhythm of brass band music. This 2025, the Putleco Carnival took place from March 1 to March 4. During these days, Putla Villa de Guerrero will be filled with joy, color, and tradition, offering attendees a unique experience full of culture and festivity. The Putleco Carnival is not only an expression of cultural identity but also an important economic driver for the community. During the days of celebration, Putla Villa de Guerrero welcomes hundreds of visitors who enjoy the festive atmosphere, bringing benefits to local businesses and promoting tourism in the region.
