In Memory of Charlie Maynard

It is with great sadness that we must announce the passing of long time West Virginia Schools Ath- letic Coaches Association (WVSACA) Secretary and Treasurer Charlie Maynard. Charlie served the WVSACA for over 50 years. He was the region 9 representative of McDowell, Wyoming, Logan, and Mingo counties. Coach Charles Maynard graduated from Burch High School in 1966. He went to West Virginia Tech for one year then transferred and graduated from Marshall University in 1969. He began his career while student teaching and assisting with coaching at Ceredo Kenova High School. After graduating from Marshall with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education/Health and English, he accepted a position in 1969 as head coach of an industrial basketball league at the YMCA in Huntington, WV. In 1970 he relocated to accept a teaching and coaching position at Spanishburg High School. He was the head coach for the junior high boys’ team and the assistant to Paul Haynes at the high school level where he would eventually take over the head coach position. He held the position at Spanishburg for 25 years also serving as the cross-country coach until the consolidation and closing of the school. In 1995 he transitioned again but to the college level where he was an assistant coach at Bluefield State College. Along with his leadership they won the WVIAC championship. Secretary-Treasurer Charlie Maynard Retired In 1998 he added another level to his resume as he was hired to coach the Princeton Middle School girls’ basketball team. After winning many county championships he retired with his famous red towel from teaching and coaching in Mercer County in 2003. While at Princeton middle school he also served as the golf coach and athletic director. He continued his coaching career as a volunteer coach to various sports in the community from little league to the high school level. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 53 years Debbie, daughters Jill and Melinda, and his grandson Clay.
