About Wellbeing Officers

The role of a Wellbeing Officer is to be a point of contact for any employee who is experiencing a mental health issue or emotional distress.

Our team members are trained on how to support in a number of different areas, including those who may be developing a mental health concern. They do not diagnose mental health conditions, but they do offer initial support and direction to appropriate professional help.

Please reach out to any of our team who will be more than willing to listen. Please note that all conversations with Wellbeing Officers are 100% confidential unless there is a danger to the individual or others.

The interactions could range from having an initial conversation with

someone through to supporting the person

to get appropriate help if necessary.

Why did you volunteer to be a Wellbeing Officer? I volunteered to be a mental health officer because it is important to support colleagues to know there are safe spaces and people in the firm, who will listen with empathy and compassion in challenging times or difficult moments. Why should we look after our physical and mental wellbeing? Your physical and mental well being is paramount to look after. Taking time out to pursue a personal passion or hobby, exercise or other activity unconnected with work, clears and re-sets the mind, improves concentration, cognitive problem solving and overall wellbeing, whilst reducing mental illness risks. These are things which will

blithe adjectives or throw away remarks. By doing so, we remove ingrained negative associations and connotations of mental health, enhance inclusiveness, and foster a climate of compassion and understanding for others. Equally it is important to acknowledge and recognise that a brave and present mind, confidently seeks assistance from others or mental health care professionals when needed. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? I make a commitment to set aside time each day to engage in a non-work related practical activity. It does not have to be the same activity each day, just something that gets you out from behind the desk and rests the mind. Home renovation works, listening to music whilst walking, cycling, going for a skateboard, or playing in a band, are all things I find are great ways to achieve that.

enhance your overall work performance, effectiveness and resilience to stress. What are some of the ways we can

challenge stigma around mental health? It is important to model and remind people that our language matters. To that end, it is important to refrain from using mental health conditions as

Why did you volunteer to be a Wellbeing Officer? As a psychology student, I understand that our wellbeing can impact every facet of our lives, especially in the workplace. In such a relentless and busy working environment, it can be easy to become stressed and overwhelmed. I volunteered to be a Wellbeing Officer as I would like to help any of my fellow colleagues who may be in need of a friend or support. Why should we look after our physical and mental wellbeing? We should look after our physical and mental well-being, as they directly have an impact on our quality of life. Poor physical and mental wellbeing can have a domino effect and lead to a decline in other areas, and prevent us from living happy, fulfilling and productive lives. What are some of the ways we can challenge stigma around mental health? Some ways we can challenge stigma around mental health, is by having open and honest conversations, and by educating ourselves. There

is nothing wrong with going through a tough time or needing help so it’s important to reach out. There can also be misconceptions about mental health, so it’s important to recognise the signs and support where you can. What are your book or podcast recommendations on the topic of mental health? One of my favourite podcasts is called ‘The Line and Length Podcast’, which is centred on candid conversations on mental health and trying to reduce the stigma surrounding it. There are a variety of guests including, but not limited to, athletes, corporates, and teachers who all discuss their experiences with mental health. A book I recommend is called ‘Emotional Agility’ by Susan David which provides insight into how best to achieve a fulfilling life, not by supressing or avoiding difficulties, but by facing them with compassion and courage.

What do you do to look after your wellbeing? During stressful work days, I take time to step away from my desk and walk around the block or call a friend. Outside of work, I love doing Pilates and going for walks listening to a podcast – this makes me feel calm and energised.

As a newly admitted lawyer, maintaining physical and mental wellbeing in a high- pressure, fast-paced work environment is important to me for career longevity. I am motivated to help my colleagues, particularly fellow young lawyers, achieve the same. Why should we look after our physical and mental wellbeing? It will make you feel happier, calmer, and more balanced – a benefit to both your personal and professional lives. What are some of the ways we can challenge stigma around mental health? Talking about it! Sharing how you feel with others (the good, the bad and the ugly) makes others feel less alone and encouraged to share how they are feeling themselves.

wellbeing of others, particularly those that you know have done it tough recently, will slowly but surely make discussing or even acknowledging the topic of mental health less of a taboo. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? An individual’s needs in order to maintain their wellbeing will vary from person to person, but for me there are a few key areas I need to maintain stay happy and healthy. Remaining true to myself and my own needs, communicating those needs to others, and trusting my ‘gut’ are probably the most important. A healthy Work/Life and Me Time/Others Time balance is also integral. Also I try not to let numbers dictate my self- worth or happiness, such as those on my bank balance, scales or my age. Oh, and drink plenty of water, get lots of sleep, wear sunscreen and move that body!

because I strongly believe in the merits of this programme and the positive effects it could have on our staff. Talking openly about your mental health struggles does not come easily to most people, and as someone who has had issue in the pasts themselves and has also had family and friends who I have spoken to about their own hardships, I really welcome the opportunity to be able to point people in the right direction and give them a chance to talk things out. What are some of the ways we can challenge stigma around mental health? I think being open and honest about our own mental health experiences will really help break down the stigma that surrounds the topic. Also regularly asking about the

Why did you volunteer to be a Wellbeing Officer? Mental Health and Wellbeing is a cause I’m incredibly passionate about and I think its important to get involved, at the firm or wherever we can, to get behind the cause and give people more support in this area. Personally, I have unfortunately had several close friends affected by severe mental health issues, some of which sadly are no longer with us. It highlighted for me that people are suffering but suffering in silence and so we really need to change the conversation around mental health issues so people can speak openly and without shame or stigma. Also, wellbeing and mental health hygiene keep us happy and moving forward in a positive way, so anything I can do to contribute to that I always have time for. Why should we look after our physical and mental wellbeing? Its just been a traditionally undervalued part of our health. No one has a problem telling people about their sprained wrist or a bad case of the flu and needing some time off. Being able to say you’re feeling depressed or anxious and need some time is exactly the same thing but unfortunately isn’t as easy for people to say. Its important because it’s the starting point and cornerstone of a happy, productive and meaningful life and affects all the other areas. Without good physical and mental health, being able to succeed in your career, relationships, religious and spiritual practice and your family relationships is that much harder. If you’re

healthy, you’re always better able to serve and contribute positively to your friends, family and colleagues. Unfortunately, its often the reverse that’s prioritised. What are some of the ways we can challenge stigma around mental health? Be proud to speak openly about your mental health. Be the leader in conversations with your friends, family and colleagues about your mental health and you’ll find others will do the same in turn. As a firm, we should foster that type of culture, where mental health is no less important than physical health. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? Go to the gym 3-4 times a week, read often, get out into nature and hike/bushwalk whenever I can and a good meditation app. What are your book or podcast recommendations on the topic of mental health? Calm is a great app that has a heap of great mediations, music and talks on mental health and wellbeing. Its expensive but has so many features so well worth the investment. Stoic philosophy is a great resource for those looking to work on their mental health. I have a copy of Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations that sits by my bed. Its got countless nuggets of wisdom about how to navigate the stresses of everyday life, what’s important and what to focus on and how to not sweat the small stuff.

Why did you volunteer to be a Wellbeing Officer? I volunteered because mental health and wellbeing are causes close to my heart. I have experienced, first-hand, the importance of a conversation. I think the Wellbeing Office role is a really important one, as it provides friends, colleagues, even strangers with a more informal way to seek help before getting professional assistance. What are some of the ways we can challenge stigma around mental health? I am a firm believer in having champions for positive mental health and public examples of vulnerability – this helps break down the stigma. That’s why I appreciate it every time I see a celebrity or public figure talk about their mental health.

What do you do to look after your wellbeing? I do my best to talk about my feelings and struggles to my friends and family. I also try to exercise regularly as I feel this definitely helps maintain the best mental wellbeing I can. What are your book or podcast recommendations on the topic of mental health? All In The Mind (Podcast). Bunch of different topics – deep dives the science and psychology of social issues and mental health.

thoughts, managing the juggle and ‘to do lists’ especially with 2 independent and adorable schnauzers. Undoubtedly the best way I look after my mental health and wellbeing is meditation – it provides positive mental, physical, emotional, creative and social connections. When I practice Vedic mediation daily I embrace this calm clarity and mindfulness and receive a deep positive difference in my day.

To listen and support you when you need. What are some of the ways we can challenge stigma around mental health? Have the conversation. Talk about mental health at all ages, be open and educate ourselves, no whispers or side glances, call out the jokes, memes and stop the innuendo and always use correct language in our conversations. This is a health condition that needs all our support and care. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? I mix it up and listen to my body, mind and others as to what I need. I engage with my family, friends, yoga and time with my dogs. A dog walk is great for clearing my racing

Why did you volunteer to be a Wellbeing Officer? I volunteered to be a Wellbeing Officer to learn more about physical and mental wellbeing and to be able to use those tools to be able to sensitively help those around me. Why should we look after our physical and mental wellbeing? There’s a strong correlation between physical and mental wellbeing and when we look after both we have a higher quality of life and overall longevity. This is important not just to maximise our performance at work but to also help us enjoy time with our friends and family and to pursue personal goals. What are some of the ways we can challenge stigma around mental health? Through communication – by being open about our own experiences and by checking in on those around us we can help normalise the importance of mental health.

How do you promote positive mental health practices? By checking in on our colleagues and fostering a supportive culture where self-care practices and work-life balance are encouraged. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? I make time for my favourite activities, like going for long walks in nature, disconnecting from my phone when possible and prioritising healthy sleeping habits. I also find it helpful to reach out to friends and spend time with them to keep myself in a supportive environment. What are your book or podcast recommendations on the topic of mental health? I highly recommend the Huberman Lab podcast! Dr Andrew Huberman is a neuroscientist who explains how our brain and body are connected provides useful ‘protocols’ on healthy habits.

What do you do to look after your wellbeing? Regular exercise and spending time with friends and family. What are your book or podcast recommendations on the topic of mental health? The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, Happy Place Podcast.

Law can be a stressful profession and finding someone objective to talk to is often the first hurdle. Knowing that there is help available from us as Wellbeing Officers should provide reassurance that we are an organisation that invests in our people and their mental health. How do you promote positive mental health practices? I am always open with my team and make it clear that they should be too – if anyone has anything preventing them from being able to work, I’d like them to feel able to come to me for guidance. I leave on time to pick my daughter up and there have been times that I’ve had to leave early when she’s sick. There doesn’t need to be a work ‘face’ that pretends family commitments don’t exist. We can be professional and vulnerable at the same time.

Why did you volunteer to be a Wellbeing Officer? I have a family member who volunteers as a counsellor at Lifeline, and have heard countless stories about the value of a listening ear, even if only for a couple of minutes. There is still a degree of stigma around seeking mental health support, particularly in a professional environment. Having a service like this is an incredibly important step to ensure that people feel comfortable in the workplace to reach out for assistance with addressing mental health issues or emotional distress. What are some of the ways we can challenge stigma around mental health? imply by talking about it. The more open people are around steps they are taking to bolster their own mental health, the more the topic comes out of the shadows, and the

more comfortable people feel to seek support. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? I seek out honest conversations with close friends and family members as much as possible. I also tend to use music to control my mood, depending on whether I need to be lifted up or calmed down. Staying active is another huge factor for me – I like to feel as though I am making the most of my day. What are your book or podcast recommendations on the topic of mental health? Not strictly on the topic of mental health, but I really enjoyed reading Atomic Habits by James Clear. It focuses on encouraging good habits and breaking bad ones through making a series of small changes rather than trying to tackle everything all at once.

16

Why did you volunteer to be a Wellbeing Officer? I believe there is still a stigma not only in corporate places, but also in society in general, surrounding mental health. Being able to let people know there are resources and it is OK to talk about mental health at work help break those stigmas down and is one of the steps towards making someone who might be struggling alone know it is OK and that it won’t be held against you. Why should we look after our physical and mental wellbeing? My dad always said “A healthy body is the home to a healthy mind/soul” and vice versa – ultimately we don’t just want to go through life just surviving, we want to thrive. Thus as much as you’d like to eat healthy or go to the gym to look after your physical wellbeing it is equally important to check in with yourself and with others on howe their mental health is going and how we can support each other. What are some of the ways we can challenge stigma around mental health? We can all get involved in initiatives offered through work, showing people that it is “normal” to talk openly about any struggles, we can create a safe space and champion people who is a good example of a healthy work/life balance. We can reiterate that mental illness is as much illness as is any physical illness – no one would

judge someone for taking personal leave when they’ve broken their arm but in most work places it will be frowned upon to take that same amount if you feel your mental health might be on a downwards trend and you need that break. We can lead by action – don’t only “give out flyers” saying prioritize mental health but actually put practices in place protecting same – hypothetical example not relating to Clyde’s: ensuring employees don’t work too much overtime and burn out, but equally ensure that there isn’t that pressure from more senior members making them feel like it is an unwritten rule in order to be promoted etc. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? I try to always remind myself that life is bigger than that one struggle, that happiness is found is the small moments and to appreciate what you have. Remind yourself “You don’t HAVE to do this, you GET to do this” – Author unknown. What are your book or podcast recommendations on the topic of mental health? Set boundaries, MAKE space for that work/life balance, encourage your teams that it is normal and OK to not always be your best but that your best will come around again – start with your inner circle and ensure that they feel it is a safe space and then work outward. Also, lead by example and also talk about mental health openly and often especially if you are in a more senior position as this is the example more junior members will follow.

on both our physical and mental wellbeing in equal measures. Many of us take our health for granted until we (or our loved ones) are struck down with illness, but I believe that if we take regular, proactive steps in life and work to care for our physical and mental wellbeing, many illnesses can be entirely prevented. What are your book or podcast recommendations on the topic of mental health? Meditation apps would be up there in the number one category for me. Calm is my preferred app for meditation at the moment. I also love Jay Shetty’s work on the subject, and a great recent read was The Mindful High Performer by Chelsea Pottenger.

I believe that supporting mental health is as important as supporting physical health, and I would like everyone to feel safe and free to bring their whole selves to work. As a person who has sustained significant loss in recent years, I have learned first hand how important it is to have support and care available both inside and outside of work. I also care very much for the team we have here at Clyde’s and want to see everyone thrive in all areas of their lives. Why should we look after our physical and mental wellbeing? When you get sick you realise how little you are able to do in life without your health, and sickness extends beyond physical and visible ailments to the invisible, mental ailments. To survive and ultimately thrive in life in the long term, we all need to consistently focus

Why did you volunteer to be a Wellbeing Officer? In short – I really care about advocating for wellbeing in (and out of) the workplace. Overtime, conversations around wellbeing have become less stigmatised, but there is definitely still work to be done. I want to be a part of the solution, and provide those around me with a safe space to discuss challenges they may be facing. What are some of the ways we can challenge stigma around mental health? Talk about it – if you’re able to admit to certain challenges you’re facing, it encourages those around you to do the same. It doesn’t have to be in a public environment, but simply being honest when someone asks you “how are you?” can create a relationship where both parties feel like they can be vulnerable without judgement. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? It can be difficult to feel like you are ticking all of the boxes, all of the time. It’s really hard to meet work commitments while also exercising every day, getting 8+ hours sleep, drinking 2L of water,

socialising, eating healthy and practicing selfcare on a daily basis. I try my best to achieve as many of these things as possible in order to fill my bucket – but I also try my best to be kind to myself when it’s just not possible. Where I can, I combine a couple of ‘wellbeing goals’ in one – for example, I go to the gym with a friend and I drink a glass of water at every meal. I also really prioritise my sleep, because I know that everything seems harder when you’re exhausted. Something I’ve also found really helpful, is having projects or goals outside of work. I sometimes struggle to ‘just relax’, so having a craft project I’m working on, a monthly book club, or a sporting event I’m working towards really encourages me to engage in activities that help me wind down.

What do you do to look after your wellbeing? By exercising or going for a walk, doing things that bring me joy like baking. I also try meditation from time to time. The trick is to find something that works for you.

I wanted to be able to provide a level of support to people who need it, and also advocate for the EAP program a great service that Clyde & Co offers. What are some of the ways we can challenge stigma around mental health? By talking more openly about it, raising more awareness in the office space not just on R U OK? Day but all year round. Organise guests speakers/webinar on the topic.

Why did you volunteer to be a Wellbeing Officer? During my career I have personally experienced mental health challenges and also supported colleagues who were experiencing mental health issues. When I needed help and guidance I was fortunate to have support and assistance from many people in my life, including my then colleagues. The legal profession has a higher rate of psychological distress than within the general population. Our jobs can be demanding, at times stressful and high pressured. I volunteered as a wellbeing officer because I know how impactful it can be to seek assistance from someone who has been in a similar situation. Why should we look after our physical and mental wellbeing? Because prevention is the best cure! Generally speaking, if we take care of our wellbeing we sleep better, feel better and perform better in all aspects of our lives whether it be at work or at home.

What are some of the ways we can challenge the stigma of mental health? Educate and inform by openly sharing your personal experiences whether it is with family, friends or colleagues. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? Lately, taking my dog for a walk after work, it’s a great way to wind down after work and have some fun. Making an effort to get out to the beach, a pool, lake - swimming is great exercise and studies have shown that spending time close to water can be a great mental health boost. Why did you volunteer to be a Wellbeing Officer? I volunteered to be a Wellbeing Officer because working in the legal industry is hard. We are all human experiencing the highs and lows of life and we won’t survive the journey if we don’t support each other. Why should we look after our physical and mental wellbeing? We owe it to ourselves to experience, love and help others as much as possible. Life is short but it is also very long. What are some of the ways we can challenge the stigma of mental health? Change comes from top-down. Partners, management and senior Lawyers I want to hear your stories unfiltered. I want hear about the ugly cries, existential crises, breakdowns and the path to recovery and victory. If you share yours, I will share mine.

What do you do to look after your wellbeing? • Mindfulness • Meditation

• Ask for help when necessary • Lean on family and friends • Spend time with my animals. What are your book or podcast recommendations on the topic of mental health? There is a lot of self-help resources available out. I can’t recommend one or the other because it is about what resonates with you. For those moments of pensive thoughts, I would say the following novels have shaped my life: • “Seagulls” by Johnathon Livingston • “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom • “Of mice and men” by John Steinback.

Why did you volunteer to be a Wellbeing Officer?

What are your book or podcast recommendations on the topic of mental health? Atomic Habits by James Clear – a great practical guide on how to build (and stick to) good habits, and break the bad ones. It’s all about building habits that allow you to constantly improve, reach your goals, and personally it helped me to map out an action plan for ways that I can make time for myself and the things I love.

I wanted to be a Wellbeing Officer so that I could gain formal training about how to support the people around me. I wanted to arm myself with tools and techniques to not only identify when people are struggling, but also help them feel heard and get the support they may need. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? Exercise, surround myself with supportive friends and family, and eat yummy food.

Why did you volunteer to be a Wellbeing Officer? I thought it was a great initiative and wanted to be apart of making work more fun, enjoyable and supportive for my colleagues. I believe in having a well-balanced life which starts with having heathy boundaries set between your work and personal life! Why should we look after our physical and mental wellbeing? We need to take care of ourselves in order to achieve the goals we set for ourselves at work! Even more importantly, we need to take care of our bodies and our minds so that we are able to enjoy seeing the world and spending time with our loved ones. Our own wellbeing should always be our number 1 priority!

What are some of the ways we can challenge stigma around mental health? Just talk about it – start the conversation. The best thing we can do is talk about it for what it is – the way we feel and the way that impacts us. There should be no stigma to admitting how we feel about something, or how our mental health in general is going.

Anke Joubert Paralegal

26

What are some of the ways we can challenge stigma around mental health? As with many things, having an open conversation is a good start to understanding each other and working through any concerns, particularly around mental health issues. No one should be judged if they are honest about what is concerning them. How do you promote positive mental health practices? I’m a firm believer that good mental health comes when people are truly working together. Being confident within yourself is

important, but also understanding and respecting others is very important as well. Ultimately it’s a team effort.

Why did you volunteer to be a Wellbeing Officer? In the past, I have struggled to both recognise when colleagues have been experiencing difficulties with their mental wellbeing. It’s not easy to know the best way to help someone who reaches out. I want to be the best work-friend I can be. Why should we look after our physical and mental wellbeing? We all have so many demands in our work and personal lives that it’s important we look after ourselves. We should be mindful that our colleagues have a life outside of work, and there may be other things happening that have an impact on their wellbeing.

What are some of the ways we can challenge stigma around mental health? The fact that we have Wellbeing Officers, and wellbeing training is a great step. I love that we have safe spaces for people to talk about mental health. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? I’d like to think that I’m honest when I’m really struggling. I often unload on friends and family, which gets stresses off my chest. I spend some part of every day doing something I enjoy, even if it’s reading or watching something trashy before bed.

people feel comfortable opening up and talking about issues that are affecting them. This can be very detrimental, as people can suffer in silence rather than reach out and seek support. I therefore encourage people to have open conversations about mental health and encourage people to take steps to look after their own wellbeing. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? I am mindful of the importance of my own mental health, and seek to manage my stress levels though a combination of a combination of mediation, exercise (mainly running) and “switching off” from work, and I recommend these methods to everyone! However, each individual will have their own methods of seeking to unwind and relax and it is important that everyone finds and uses techniques that work for them.

I volunteered to become a Wellbeing Officer as I have a strong interest in people’s health and wellbeing. I would like to be someone people can potentially speak to if they are facing issues and would like to receive support. Why should we look after our physical and mental wellbeing? Why did you volunteer to be a Wellbeing Officer? I volunteered to be a Wellbeing Officer because I have lost friends and a family member as a result of mental health issues which were missed or support was provided too late. I am aware that the work we do can often be stressful and challenging to our mental and physical health, so I want to provide whatever support I can to help people avoid, manage and recover from those challenges. Why should we look after our physical and mental wellbeing? Looking after your physical and mental wellbeing increases your energy levels, motivation and productivity, both for your work and for your personal life. It can reduce stress, help you sleep, improve your relationships and keep you healthy, ultimately increasing your quality of life. What are some of the ways we can challenge stigma around mental health? Bring mental health into the light. Talk about it. Share your own stories. Allow yourself to be vulnerable with your team. Tell people if you are having a tough time. You will discover that you are not alone. Not only does talking reduce the stigma, but it allows your friends, your team and your firm to support you.

How do you promote positive mental health practices? I overshare, partly because that is my nature, but partly with the intention of making my office a psychologically safe space for people to discuss their own issues, challenges and concerns. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? I walk, run and hike with my dog. This gives me time to think and decompress while getting some physical exercise. I also set time aside every day to call friends and family so my social support network remains active and I feel connected to the people I care about. What are your book or podcast recommendations on the topic of mental health? The High Performance Podcast. It is a series of interviews with high performers from various walks of life and gives valuable insights into the mindset adopted by those individuals. Don’t listen to one, listen to many and you will hear that everyone has their own challenges. We all meet adversity and we all deal with it differently. Some people’s approaches may seem bizarre, but you may find something that resonates with you. For me, it is to stay humble, trust the process and chase world-class basics.

Why should we look after our physical and mental wellbeing? Health, including both physical and mental health, is important to our quality of life. In fact, our physical and mental wellbeing are closely linked and mental health issues can often surface in physical reactions– such as in insomnia or muscle tension. The effect on our day-to- day function, behaviour and emotions can also impact work performance. Maintaining mental health practices in the work place can help us perform at our best. How do you promote positive mental health practices? Having dealt with a host of mental health issues within my own social circle, I have come to appreciate that mental health issues are more common than we would like to admit, and there is tremendous value in being able to speak openly about mental health and support each other. It is important to tackle stigma of mental health issues and recognise that seeking help for mental health issues is a sign of strength, not weakness. I check in regularly on colleagues, friends and family to build a strong community of support for one another, and ensure that there are open lines of communication and support. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? Looking after your wellbeing can look different for different people. Some will find meditation helpful, others may prefer exercise, or volunteer work (please

reach out to our Charities Committee if you are short of ideas!). For me, looking after my wellbeing means making sure I am eating the right foods and exercising regularly (at whatever level of intensity suits). I also enjoy cooking up a storm, or a run / walk along the waterfront. What are your book or podcast recommendations on the topic of mental health? Happier by Gretchen Rubin – is a podcast hosted by Gretchen Rubin and her sister Elizabeth Craft launched following the success of Rubin’s book The Happiness Project. Rubin is the former editor in chief of the Yale Law Journal and clerk for Supreme Court Justice and her podcast The Happier podcast is part of a larger ecosystem of resources on www.gretchenrubin.com, that includes an app, reading resources and toolkits going beyond understanding what happiness is, to understanding people – habit-building and increasing productivity, and how all of that trickles down to make people happier. Also check out sister podcasts A Little Happier (with shorter 3 minute episodes on understanding happiness), and More Happier… (which has just turned one!) For more light hearted (and less wordy) content, I recommend checking out social media accounts @themindgeek @sravyaa and @chibird.

Why did you volunteer to be a Wellbeing Officer? I volunteered to become a Wellbeing Officer because I take a strong interest in people’s wellbeing. I want to see people around me do well, and have always had a strong urge to help others. Additionally, I also believe that good mental health is crucial for good work quality and productivity. I observe that its importance can be easily overlooked by peers when they are swamped with work, and therefore I am motivated to help foster a culture where people will prioritize this as equally as their physical health and productivity. How do you promote positive mental health practices? I promote positive mental health practices by having open conversations about mental health, and being open about how I take care of my own mental health/wellbeing. I notice that in turn of having open conversations, it creates a platform that makes others comfortable speaking freely about their own

mental wellbeing and a space where they feel safe and not judged for their own mental health struggles. Additionally, I also encourage my peers to know their own warning signs of burn out, and encourage them to take breaks when these warning signs start to show. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? In looking after my own wellbeing, I regularly check in with my own mental health which, allows me to start taking care of my own wellbeing before it gets to a breaking point. Taking care of my own wellbeing also means scheduling my wellbeing activities ahead of time, and prioritizing it. These activities for my may include spending quality time with my friends, or just setting aside time to recharge by doing activities which I know helps me destress such as making pottery, exercising, or cooking a good meal for myself.

I think I may be able to help my colleagues who basically work with me every day. What are some of the ways we can challenge stigma around mental health? I think it may not be easy. But perhaps we can start by making more people aware of what mental health problems are, for example by organising some training and watching films about mental health problems.

Why did you volunteer to be a Wellbeing Officer? We spend a significant amount of time in our workplace. Just like we need emotional support in our family and school life, it is equally important to have access to the support we need in the work environment. Our firm has been making great effort in looking after employees’ mental health and has offered access to various sources and tools to support mental wellbeing. Being a Wellbeing Officer can bring such sources and tools closer to those among our colleagues who are in need and would be a meaningful contribution to make. What are some of the ways we can challenge stigma around mental health? To learn more about mental health and make a difference by influencing the people around us. Knowledge and understanding are the best tools to dispel stigma. Get to start from ourselves and learn what is right about mental health and what is not, and convey

the message when you spot that someone is having misunderstanding or bias on mental health. This can happen in a daily chat with your family and friends or an informal communication with your colleagues. It will be a great step to take - no matter how small the step is and it makes a difference even if only one person is influenced. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? My tips for looking after wellbeing come from little things in everyday life. On a working day, despite how busy it was, I will allow myself to have some time (even ten minutes would be good) to “do nothing” and forget about any to-do list, just to enjoy a song or a video clip of the latest show of my favourite artists. I will also explore one or two things that I really enjoy doing and dive into it for an hour or two over the weekends or holidays, and this is also very helpful to remove stress. Having some quality time for myself is important to me and it supports me through challenges and pressures.

In addition, there is no doubt that it makes you feel good when you are helping others. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? From my personal experience, there are two useful ways of looking after one person’s wellbeing. One way is to reading books such as novels or books about positive psychology.
