Why did you volunteer to be a Wellbeing Officer? Mental Health and Wellbeing is a cause I’m incredibly passionate about and I think its important to get involved, at the firm or wherever we can, to get behind the cause and give people more support in this area. Personally, I have unfortunately had several close friends affected by severe mental health issues, some of which sadly are no longer with us. It highlighted for me that people are suffering but suffering in silence and so we really need to change the conversation around mental health issues so people can speak openly and without shame or stigma. Also, wellbeing and mental health hygiene keep us happy and moving forward in a positive way, so anything I can do to contribute to that I always have time for. Why should we look after our physical and mental wellbeing? Its just been a traditionally undervalued part of our health. No one has a problem telling people about their sprained wrist or a bad case of the flu and needing some time off. Being able to say you’re feeling depressed or anxious and need some time is exactly the same thing but unfortunately isn’t as easy for people to say. Its important because it’s the starting point and cornerstone of a happy, productive and meaningful life and affects all the other areas. Without good physical and mental health, being able to succeed in your career, relationships, religious and spiritual practice and your family relationships is that much harder. If you’re
healthy, you’re always better able to serve and contribute positively to your friends, family and colleagues. Unfortunately, its often the reverse that’s prioritised. What are some of the ways we can challenge stigma around mental health? Be proud to speak openly about your mental health. Be the leader in conversations with your friends, family and colleagues about your mental health and you’ll find others will do the same in turn. As a firm, we should foster that type of culture, where mental health is no less important than physical health. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? Go to the gym 3-4 times a week, read often, get out into nature and hike/bushwalk whenever I can and a good meditation app. What are your book or podcast recommendations on the topic of mental health? Calm is a great app that has a heap of great mediations, music and talks on mental health and wellbeing. Its expensive but has so many features so well worth the investment. Stoic philosophy is a great resource for those looking to work on their mental health. I have a copy of Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations that sits by my bed. Its got countless nuggets of wisdom about how to navigate the stresses of everyday life, what’s important and what to focus on and how to not sweat the small stuff.
