Why did you volunteer to be a Wellbeing Officer? I volunteered to be a Wellbeing Officer to learn more about physical and mental wellbeing and to be able to use those tools to be able to sensitively help those around me. Why should we look after our physical and mental wellbeing? There’s a strong correlation between physical and mental wellbeing and when we look after both we have a higher quality of life and overall longevity. This is important not just to maximise our performance at work but to also help us enjoy time with our friends and family and to pursue personal goals. What are some of the ways we can challenge stigma around mental health? Through communication – by being open about our own experiences and by checking in on those around us we can help normalise the importance of mental health.
How do you promote positive mental health practices? By checking in on our colleagues and fostering a supportive culture where self-care practices and work-life balance are encouraged. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? I make time for my favourite activities, like going for long walks in nature, disconnecting from my phone when possible and prioritising healthy sleeping habits. I also find it helpful to reach out to friends and spend time with them to keep myself in a supportive environment. What are your book or podcast recommendations on the topic of mental health? I highly recommend the Huberman Lab podcast! Dr Andrew Huberman is a neuroscientist who explains how our brain and body are connected provides useful ‘protocols’ on healthy habits.
