Why did you volunteer to be a Wellbeing Officer? I have a family member who volunteers as a counsellor at Lifeline, and have heard countless stories about the value of a listening ear, even if only for a couple of minutes. There is still a degree of stigma around seeking mental health support, particularly in a professional environment. Having a service like this is an incredibly important step to ensure that people feel comfortable in the workplace to reach out for assistance with addressing mental health issues or emotional distress. What are some of the ways we can challenge stigma around mental health? imply by talking about it. The more open people are around steps they are taking to bolster their own mental health, the more the topic comes out of the shadows, and the
more comfortable people feel to seek support. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? I seek out honest conversations with close friends and family members as much as possible. I also tend to use music to control my mood, depending on whether I need to be lifted up or calmed down. Staying active is another huge factor for me – I like to feel as though I am making the most of my day. What are your book or podcast recommendations on the topic of mental health? Not strictly on the topic of mental health, but I really enjoyed reading Atomic Habits by James Clear. It focuses on encouraging good habits and breaking bad ones through making a series of small changes rather than trying to tackle everything all at once.
