Wellbeing Officers APAC 2023

21

Why did you volunteer to be a Wellbeing Officer? During my career I have personally experienced mental health challenges and also supported colleagues who were experiencing mental health issues. When I needed help and guidance I was fortunate to have support and assistance from many people in my life, including my then colleagues. The legal profession has a higher rate of psychological distress than within the general population. Our jobs can be demanding, at times stressful and high pressured. I volunteered as a wellbeing officer because I know how impactful it can be to seek assistance from someone who has been in a similar situation. Why should we look after our physical and mental wellbeing? Because prevention is the best cure! Generally speaking, if we take care of our wellbeing we sleep better, feel better and perform better in all aspects of our lives whether it be at work or at home.

What are some of the ways we can challenge the stigma of mental health? Educate and inform by openly sharing your personal experiences whether it is with family, friends or colleagues. What do you do to look after your wellbeing? Lately, taking my dog for a walk after work, it’s a great way to wind down after work and have some fun. Making an effort to get out to the beach, a pool, lake - swimming is great exercise and studies have shown that spending time close to water can be a great mental health boost.
