I T was a cold, crisp November morn ing. The bright sunshine made the newly fallen snow look like millions of diamonds as Patsy stomped and brushed big chunks of soft, beautiful snow from her overshoes. “Well, that’s done,” said Patsy as she put down the shovel. “What’s done?” said Aunt Lucy, as she noticed Patsy coming in the house all out of breath. “ You mean you’ve already shovelled the walks?” “ Yes, but I just did that while I was waiting for all of them to come past.” “While you waited for whom to come past?” “ O, you know tomorrow’s Thanksgiving: In school we’ve been talk ing about how much our community helpers do for us. I’ve just thanked the postman, the milkman, the bread man, the paper boy, and when the snowplow came past, I thanked -that man, too. I just never thought how much work so many people do to help us.” “ I suppose you thanked Mother and Daddy first of all,” said Aunt Lucy. “ Thank Mother and Dad! What shall I thank them for?” “Who prepares your meals, washes and irons your clothes, keeps your home tidy, takes care of you when you’re sick, and a thousand other things?” With a rather shameful look on her face, Patsy said, “ Mother does.” “Who pays for all your clothes, your groceries, and the light and heat bills?” “Well, I guess Daddy does that.” As Aunt Lucy looked up, a big, shiny tear skated down Patsy’s face and she said, “ O, Aunt Lucy, I’m so ashamed of my self.” Without waiting any longer, Patsy ran to the kitchen where the fragrance of mincemeat pie and cookies filled the air. She threw her arms around Mother’s neck and sobbed, “ 0, thank you, Mother!” “ For what?” asked Mother. “ Well, you know,” began Patsy, “ at school we’ve talked about how much the community helpers do for us, and I was out early this morning to thank the postman and all those other people who do so much. It wasn’t until Aunt Lucy reminded me how you and Daddy do more for me than anyone else and I have never said thank you to you be fore.” “ 0, you’re welcome a thousand times,” said Mother as tears of joy rolled down her own cheeks. “ It’s be cause we love you so much, Patsy, dear, that we want to do all those things for you.” *0 f the Omaha Gospel Tabernacle, Omaha, Nebr.

The next thing Mother knew, Patsy was calling Daddy at the office and thanking him. As soon as she finished talking, Mother called to her and said, “ Come back, Patsy, I want to talk to you again.” Mother was just washing the cookie dough from her hands, but very sincerely she began: “ Patsy, do you remember last week when Mother and Daddy came home from church so very happy? That was the night we accepted the Lord. We were just like you, Patsy. We hadn’t realized how much God loved us and how much He has done for us. He loved us so much that according to John 3:16 in your Bible He gave His only Son, Jesus, to die on the Cross that you and Mother and Daddy and everyone in the whole world might have eternal life.” By that time Mother was reading from her own Testament, Romans 3, “ ‘For all have sinned . . . ’ ” “ 0, Mother, does that mean I’ve sinned? I’ve tried so hard to do right.” “ That ‘all’ includes every one. We are all lost until we have accepted Jesus as our Saviour. But,” said Mother, “ it continues, ‘whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.’ ” It seemed that the Holy Spirit made Patsy’s sin seem just as real as her own Mother made the plan of salvation clear and simple to Patsy’s young mind. Patsy prayed, “ Dear Jesus, forgive my sins. Cleanse me, save me. Help me to live for Thee, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.” So Thanksgiving Day in Patsy’s home was one of real rejoicing as the entire family made their way to their church and from sincere, g r a t e f u 1 hearts thanked God for the joy that had flood ed their hearts, as well as their home, becausp Jesus was there.
