The Decision of Israel v. 4

The book of Numbers receives its name from the fact that there are two numberings of the people of Israel recorded in the book (chs. 1 & 26). It is also a book of order and arrange ment. God loves order and so we have presented in Numbers the order of the camp of Israel in relation to the Taber nacle, et cetera. The fact of the order liness of God needs to be emphasized' today as God’s people seek to do His will. “ Let all things be done decently and in order” (1 Cor. 14:40). Numbers might also be called “ The Book of Murmurings.” In it we find God’s people continually dissatisfied against God and murmuring at their lot. They murmured against their food and drink, their blessings and punish ments, their leaders and priests, and against God Himself. This attitude of murmuring is prominent in today’s lesson. At Kadesh-barnea they mur mured when the spies came back from Canaan to give their report of the Promised Land. Very practical les sons ought to be learned from Israel’s failure at this time. The Complaint of Israel vv. 1-3 The ten spies saw the giants of the Promised Land instead of God. They were impressed with all the hindrances in the way of their occupation of the Land instead of with the power of God who was able to fulfill every promise He had made to His people. When these unbelieving spies gave their report the people saw eye to eye with them. They were impressed with the giants and forgot God. Many times God’s people today have tne tendency to fix their eyes upon the giants of difficulty which stand in the way of Christian victory and forget that God is able for every diffi culty (Phil. 4:13).

Israel for whom God had done so much were now ready to turn their faces toward Egypt. This certainly was a wrong decision. God had not brought His people out of the land of bondage to have them turn back to that land again. He had something much better for them. But how loath they were to receive it! They were just like some followers of the Lord today. At the first real test they cower and head back toward the things of the world. But the world cannot satisfy the child of God. He finds satisfaction only as he relies upon God to give him victory against every giant and walled city that may face him. God will do this for every one who will trust Him. The Minority Report vv. 5-9 Hushed by the solemn attitude of Moses and Aaron in view of the tragic situation (v. 5), the people of Israel listened to the minority report of Joshua and Caleb. These two men dared to be lieve God. They saw all the difficulties but their faith surmounted them for it carried them up to God who was sufficient for all these things. Thank God, He always has a few people like Joshua and Caleb who are willing to trust God in every circumstance. Are you listed among their number? The Unbelief of Israel vv. 10,11 In spite of the glorious testimony of God’s two faithful servants and the radiant witness of the Shekinah glory, Israel would not believe. They provoked God by their stubbornness and brought upon themselves the discipline of years of wilderness wanderings. Unbelief is a hard taskmaster.
