SPOTLIGHT ON SCHOOLS

The Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Zagreb became the 128th institution worldwide to achieve triple accreditation following its recent accession to the AMBA network. Tim Banerjee Dhoul offers an introduction to a school that forms part of a university established in the 17th century

HISTORY Founded in 1669 by Habsburg king and Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I, the University of Zagreb is Croatia’s oldest university. It was run by the Jesuits for more than a century before becoming the Royal Academy of Science in 1776. The modern University of Zagreb was then established in 1874. The university’s Faculty of Economics and Business dates back to the foundation of the Faculty of Trade and Transport in Zagreb in 1920. It became known as the Faculty of Economics and Business – Zagreb in 1982, following the integration of the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Economic Sciences and the Faculty of Foreign Trade and now forms one of the institution’s 31 components.

LOCATION The Faculty of Economics and Business – Zagreb is based at the

heart of the Croatian capital, in the district of Maksimir. While its location has remained unchanged since the 1950s, the building has been upgraded to provide facilities heralded as some of the region’s largest and most modern. In addition, a new site housing professional studies was opened in 2011as part of the university’s Borongaj campus project, situated in the capital’s Peščenica-Žitnjak district. A regional hub for industry, research and transport connections, Zagreb has been classified as a Beta- global city for its international connectedness by Loughborough University think tank, the Globalisation and World Cities Research Network, alongside the likes of Stuttgart, Oslo and Quito.

COURSES The school’s MBA programme format is modular, with students attending classes for one week each month between 4pm

and 9pm. The programme is completed in three terms (semesters), each of which has five cycles of classes. The first two terms cover nine core courses, while a minimum of five electives are selected for study during the third and final term. The school also offers one-year, English- language master’s degrees in the fields of economics and business. Those opting for a business master’s have five areas of specialisation to choose from, including management, trade and international business and leadership.
