“Pit Bulls” in Advertising

Buster Brown Shoes: The original reputation of the American Pit Bull was that of a beloved children’s pet. Richard Outcault created the “Buster Brown” comic strip in 1902. Buster Brown, his girlfriend Mary Jane and Tige their American Pit Bull Dog were famous, so famous that the Buster Brown character with his beloved American Pit Bull Tige were later adopted by the famed Brown Shoe Company in 1904.

“That’s my dog Tige he lives in a shoe, I’m Buster Brown, look for me in there too.” Buster Brown Shoes were so well known as a children’s shoe brand and are still sold today (over a hundred years later!).You have to wonder What happened to change the loyal, protective and beloved family dog reputation and image of the American Pit Bull. Did the dog change or did we?
