Dancers' Workshop presents Contemporary Dance Wyoming in "Up Close"

presents

JUN 8 & 9 Black Box Studio 1

Dear Friends & Family,

“Let’s build a home together” has been resonating through the studios of Dancers’ Workshop this spring. With many staff members facing housing and rising rent challenges, we recognize just how important we all are to each other. Contemporary Dance Wyoming began with the vision of Artistic Director Babs Case years ago when Dancers’ Workshop rented basement studios in the historic Pink Garter Plaza. The vision was to gather an ensemble of professional dancers who would also provide the DW School with professional dance education. Today Associate Artistic Director Fran Romo plays a major role in the company as a choreographer and a performer. After becoming familiar with Dancers’ Workshop while performing here with London-based Richard Alston Dance and New York-based Gallim Dance, Fran decided to relocate to Jackson. Now celebrating its 23rd season, CDW represents the pinnacle of expressive and innovative modern dance in Wyoming. Tonight’s program UP CLOSE, CDW’s annual performance project, will feature two programs, fondly named X and O. Choreographic works from multiple local creatives will be included, thus demonstrating an athletic range of diverse styles and artistic processes. Original music works from locally connected artists are also included this year. It felt important to Fran and me to support and bring focus to all the amazing creative artists within our community. We hope you enjoy our explorations, and join us in celebrating how lucky we are to have each other. Thank you for your support by being here tonight. Let’s build an artful home together, –Babs and Fran

When we find ourselves feeling outside, left alone, forgotten, dealing with the repercussions of life’s many decisions, what do we do? As artists who use our bodies as our instruments, we feel the particular sting of the realities of time. As women, even more so. Where do we go, what do we do, and who do we reach out to? Will they reach back? We are left wondering “what if?” The pandemic was the great amplifier of all we know. It brought forward our worst fears, qualities and tendencies as well as our best. It was a great test. The relationships most delicate sometimes strengthened, sometimes shattered. This piece is just in part about that, but most of all it is about hope. Thank you Amelia Hufsmith for your presence and creative energy during the creation of this work.

This new work was inspired by visual artist Babs Case. “The work explores various themes of entanglement of past, present and future and existing in all places at one time. What information is revealed to us in our dream and contemplative states, in the universe and the whole spectacle of nature, both as known to the mind and as beheld to the eye,...”

Contemporary Dance Wyoming is an ensemble of professional Dancers that inspire through their power of movement in modern dance performance.

Founded and led by Artistic Director Babs Case, CDW is celebrating its 25th season.

The Company has worked collaboratively with artists from major dance companies around the country, building repertoire that has been described as “visually stimulating, highly athletic and exhilarating”. CDW has toured throughout the Western region, as well as performing in New York City. The Company travels statewide to offer performances and residencies in schools that educate communities about modern dance. CDW continues to grow in unexpected ways and adds a meaningful dimension to our community’s cultural history.

BABS CASE Artistic Director and DW Executive Director

Babs has performed, choreographed, and taught modern dance throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia, Canada, and South America. She attributes her multidisciplinary approach to dance to her professional affiliations with the Harry Partch Foundation and Company, Richard Landry of the Philip Glass

Ensemble, and Lincoln Center Institute and Obie award winning actor Bob Berky. She was the founding director of The Center for the Arts in Stuart, FL for 12 years. Babs is a past beneficiary of the National Endowment for the Arts funding and a two-time recipient of both the Florida and Wyoming Fellowship Awards for Choreography. In 1992, she was awarded an Indo-American Research Fulbright fellowship to study dance, theatre, and visual arts in India. As an educator, Babs has taught at universities throughout the U.S., and offers multidisciplinary residencies in schools and workshops to students of all socioeconomic backgrounds. In 1999 she moved to Wyoming and formed Wyoming’s first modern dance company, Contemporary Dance Wyoming, which tours regionally performing lecture demonstrations in schools and formal concerts for the public. She has been the Artistic Director for Dancers’ Workshop for the past 25 years. Most recently her contributions to the arts were recognized by receiving the Cultural Council of Jackson Hole Award for Creativity in 2009, and by receiving the Wyoming Governor’s Arts Award in 2013.

CDW DANCERS

MICHAELA ELLINGSON CDW Member Michaela Ellingson began her training at Dancers’ Workshop, then received her BFA in dance from SUNY Purchase and her MA from London Contemporary Dance School where she danced with EDge Postgraduate Company. She has been a member of Contemporary Dance Wyoming for 7 seasons, and she is a guest artist with David Dorfman Dance. She continues to make her own work, and was recently awarded the Wyoming Arts Council Performing Arts Fellowship Grant. She is the Junior Company Director at Dancers’ Workshop and teaches Pilates.

SARAH HEMPHILL CDW Member

Sarah Hemphill is a Jackson native who took her first dance class in the studios of Dancers’ Workshop. She holds a BFA in modern dance from the University of Utah, and is a comprehensively certified Balanced Body Pilates Instructor. She has been dancing with CDW throughout several seasons since 2010. Throughout her dance career she has had the great honor of working with choreographers including Kaye Richards, Deborah Hay, Eric Handman, and Trisha Brown, among others. She currently oversees the Pilates program and Adult Wellness Program at Dancers’ Workshop, and is also a mom of two which keeps her plenty busy when not in the studios.

RACHEL HOLMES CDW Member and Choreographer

Rachel Holmes began her formal dance training with Anneliese Von Oettigen, founder of Cincinnati Civic Ballet, and continued training at the School for Creative and Performing Arts. Upon early graduation from high school, Rachel went on to work with the Dance Theatre of Harlem ensemble company, Joan Miller, Elisa Monte, Nejla Yatkin, and Annmaria Mazzini. In 2014, Rachel moved to Jackson, WY where she has continued to dance with CDW throughout the years. She enjoys passing on knowledge she received from some of her favorite educators such as Francesca Corkle, Yoko Ichino, and Ronald Perry to the students she’s been fortunate to teach.

AMY “RAY” KINGWILL CDW Dancer and Choreographer

Amy “Ray” Kingwill is a lover of movement. Born and raised in Jackson, her earliest memories are of being in the studios of DW. She returned to the region in 2020 after many years as a performer, arts administrator, and Pilates Instructor primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area. She still feels the most herself on a wood floor; seeking joy, silliness and pleasure in every roll and lift. Dancing with CDW for her second year, she is pleased to present her own choreography, where in collaboration with the dancers, she looks forward to sharing her personal style and voice. She holds a BFA in Modern Dance from the University of Utah and is a comprehensively certified Body Arts and Science International (BASI) Pilates Instructor and Functional Movement Specialist, among other certifications and accolades of equally great and little importance.

CHARLOTTE LANDREAU CDW Member

Charlotte Landreau, a native of France, is an ex-pre- Olympic rhythmic gymnast. After a 10-year long successful career where she finished 3rd in France, Charlotte decided to switch careers and applied to the Maurice Bejart School in Switzerland. After studying ballet, music, singing, acting and modern dance for two years, Charlotte auditioned for the Martha Graham School and moved to New York. After six months at the famous school, she was honored with the Excellence in Performance Award while dancing for the pre-professional company. Charlotte was then hired by the Martha Graham Dance Company and performed all over the world for almost a decade, receiving many promotions until she became Principal dancer. Charlotte became a master teacher in the Graham technique, and is a guest teacher in Switzerland, France, and America. She now teaches modern dance at the Dancer’s Workshop in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and performs as a guest artist in galas. FRANCESCA ROMO CDW Associate Artistic Director and Dancer Francesca Romo was born in London and knew she wanted to dance early in life. After graduating from the Royal Ballet School and London Contemporary Dance School, she danced for The Richard Alston Dance Company 2003-2006. While on tour, she fell in love with the U.S., and moved to New York to Co-found the Gallim Dance Company in 2006. She has toured and created work both internationally and nationally, and now resides at Dancers’ Workshop in Jackson Hole as the Associate Artistic Director for CDW, where she dances, teaches, mentors, and is an integral part of wellness programming teaching Gyrotonic and Craniosacral work with both adults and infants. A recipient of the Wyoming Arts Council Grant for 2023, Fran is delighted and grateful for this opportunity from DW and the WAC to create this work in process.

LUKE DAKOTA ZENDER CDW Member

Luke Dakota Zender is a gender nonconforming non-binary movement based performance artist that values the art of story-telling over technique, believing that movement is for all. Zender has been dancing and choreographing in Los Angeles, New York and a few places in-between for the last ten years both in the commercial and concert worlds. In that time, they have come to prioritize equity and inclusion above all else. The dance industry and lifestyle has been a mirror for Zender’s world and has provoked an inner work that has been equally fruitful and challenging. They believe that dance, particularly dance education, has the power to transcend and teach life skills valuable to anyone at any and every part of life. As a dancer Luke Dakota has had the privilege to study under David Dorfman, Bill T. Jones, Anouk Van Dijk, Debbie Allen, and many more. They have recently Performed for Sean Keylock Company, Bodyart, Contemporary Dance Wyoming, Invertigo Dance Theatre, Heidi Duckler Dance, Alice Klock, and have also been consistently creating their own work in an effort to continuously dive deeper into the craft.

CDW GUEST DANCERS

GEORGIE ARMSTRONG CDW Guest Dancer

Georgie Armstrong, although new to the world of dance and performing but not to the passion of moving her body, had an early introduction to dancing from her mom and sisters in the kitchen while they made dinner. Dance classes came much later, but the joy of dancing was always there. She recently spent a beautiful five weeks in India immersed in contemporary technique and research, expanding greatly in heartfelt creativity and movement. Through this immersion she realized collective, improvisational movement is her preferred way of connecting with others. She now holds space to offer this opportunity of moving in creativity and joy together to the community of Jackson. This year’s UP CLOSE showcase will be her first time performing with CDW, and her second time performing ever, and she is grateful for the opportunity to learn from their incredible artistry.

LAUREN ARNDT CDW Guest Dancer

Lauren Arndt is a dancer, landscape designer and overall movement enthusiast originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She spent most of her childhood in a dance studio, where she fell in love with modern dance. Her curiosity for body and space continued into adulthood when she discovered the world of environmental design. She received her Masters of Landscape Architecture from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, where she focused her studies on the choreography and design of public space and the work of Lawrence and Anna Halprin. Lauren currently works as a Landscape Designer at HDLA, and teaches and dances at Dancer’s Workshop.

MACKENZIE MOORE CDW Guest Dancer

MacKenzie Moore discovered an early love for movement dancing with DW. She eventually stopped dancing to pursue interests in education, advocacy and ecology. Later in life, MacKenzie rediscovered dance through Contact Improvisation, and immediately felt at home in the surprising, playful or meditative experiences that arise through improvisation with others. She is an after school educator at Teton Literacy Center, and spends her free time exploring the world through movement, whether that is on the trail or in the dance studio.

ELISE BAKER MUMFORD CDW Guest Dancer

Elise Baker Mumford is a dancer, choreographer, and actor originally from Chicago, IL, Elise trained with the Joffrey Ballet Academy, Interlochen Arts Academy, and received her Bachelor’s Degree with Honors in Dance Performance and Art History from Skidmore College. Elise studied the Meisner Technique of acting at The Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theater for 3 years while living in NYC. Her work as a Design Project Manager brought her to Jackson Hole full-time in June 2020. Elise previous dance and acting experience includes the role of Marie Antoinette in Lauren Gunderson’s The Revolutionists, Marisa in the musical Women on The Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and soloist in Martha Graham’s Steps on the Street, staged by Susan Kikuchi and performed at The Joyce Theater in NYC for the University Partners Showcase. She is a dancer in music videos for artists Theo Lawrence and Carlisle, and choreographed two music videos for British artist, Emie Nathan. Elise currently teaches Adult Ballet at Dancers’ Workshop.

GUEST ARTISTS

SHEENA DHAMSANIA Musician/Composer

Sheena Dhamsania is a musician, composer, and educator. Born and raised in metro-Detroit, Michigan, Sheena became intrigued with low-end instruments, performed Indian folk dance nationally, and studied bassoon on scholarship at Michigan State University. She then settled in Wyoming to pursue a decade-long teaching and freelance music career, where she was awarded 2019 Teacher of the Year and was twice voted a Best of Jackson Hole musician. She has performed and recorded music for brands including Arc’Teryx, Skullcandy, Quicksilver, and The North Face. Currently residing in Oakland, California, Dhamsania composes music for podcast, film, dance, and art venues in the United States, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.

CHRISTOPHER GHERMAN Musician/Composer

Christopher Gherman is a multidisciplinary artist in the space of healing, ecology and spirituality. As a musician, Christopher began his journey as a trumpeter in the Black American Music (jazz) tradition. He went on to earn his B.A. in Music Composition. Life took a different turn at this time and Chris began focusing on community work and has since worked for non-profits with that aim. The music Chris creates now can be meditative, reflective, and experimental, having veered from the jazz tradition into genres such as ambient, shoegaze, post-rock, indie, folk, and field recording. He has created music in tandem with his long time collaborator and dear friend, Ryan Ptasnik, for several years. Sharing a ground of common inspiration, introspection, and aesthetics, Chris and Ryan formed the music project hawktower (so named after the American Poet Robinson Jeffers hand built creative sanctuary).

RYAN PTASNIK Musician/Composer

Ryan Ptasnik is a native of Pinedale, WY, he grew up with an exposure to, and a wonderment of the natural world. The diverse and dynamic sounds of nature continue to be a primary influence in his music, no matter the genre or role in which he may find himself. His first teachers and influences include Ronnie Bedford and Randy Gelispie- both outstanding musicians and educators primarily rooted in jazz music. They were pivotal in him earning a master’s degree in jazz studies from Michigan State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree as a recipient of the Starr Charitable Foundation Scholarship. In addition to playing the drums in myriad capacities, Ryan has recently started supporting various artists through recording and producing their music; a great honor and joy for him. He considers both producing and composing as processes that are forms of invitation and stewardship. Working with Dancer’s Workshop is wholly collaborative in the shaping of sounds and form, while at the same time being intimately personal and introspective- an inner pursuit for sharing a truth of the lived human experience through an authentic and vulnerable creative expression. Ultimately, Ryan feels his work to be a path and practice of curiosity and care for humanity.

Let’s build a home, a community... together!

Today it is difficult for a DW staff member to afford to rent and literally, impossible to buy a home in Jackson. We need everyones’ help and awareness. All who live here can imagine how difficult it might be to find qualified, professional dance instructors who can afford to live and work here. What do we want our home, our community to become? At DW, we dream of a place where our year-round resident children and adults alike can experience the beauty of art and dance in the arms of a caring community, everyday.

Supporting our community... together.

If you can help provide affordable housing for a DW employee , DW will in return, acknowledge your support with an invitation to participate in any or all of our programs free of charge.
