2025 NOVEMBER / DEC
THE GREYTON POST
23
Dearest Readers,
and well. Between the foraging pigs, rampaging baboons and the grazing ponies, there’s rarely a dull moment. Do remember — it’s the season of giving, not griping. Be kind, stay calm, and perhaps keep your sense of humour handy. So, my dear villagers, as we trip merrily into 2026 — let us do so with a twinkle in the eye, a wag in the tail, and a firm grip on the poop bag.
Citroen. One cannot, as I once did, expect champagne at every open garden (though what a marvellous dream that would be — many gardens later, I would be positively blooming myself). Now, onto a matter of less rosy fragrance — dog deposits. If your beloved pooch leaves a calling card on someone’s driveway or a public path, do be so kind as to remove it. Word is that certain locals are threatening to name and shame via CCTV. One trembles at the thought of it all going French- style, with DNA testing on droppings — can you imagine the scandal? Meanwhile, the village’s unofficial entertainment continues: baboons, pigs, ponies, and dogs, all keeping our WhatsApp groups alive
— a sign with bite! Perhaps a metaphor for our newfound vigour as a village. One could almost believe the ‘powers that be’ read my last column and took it as a subtle nudge. You’re welcome, darling Greyton. The Rose Fair and Open Gardens were, as ever, a triumph. Roses of every hue and temperament were shown off like debutantes at their first ball. I must confess to wondering whether a mischievous neighbour or two might have snipped a prize bloom under cover of darkness - I heard that both the NGK and The Mews had quite a spectacular array of roses this year! A small reminder for next year, my loves: the Garden of Bubbles is a separate glorious event at the divine Maison
As we reach the final issue of the year, one must pause — teacup or tipple in hand — to reflect on what a glorious muddle of a year it has been, from the arrival of handsome new firetrucks and their gallant handlers, to colourful tea parties and the wonderful visitors who have adorned our streets at a variety of thirst- quenching and artful events. Our dear village has also undergone something of a makeover — a little pre- festive spruce, if you will. The potholes are being filled and a smart new brick pathway (a small miracle in itself) on Oak Street, bushes trimmed, flowers blooming and the arrival of the new road sign has caused quite the flutter. Some say it “has teeth,” which I find terribly reassuring
Namaste and nonsense,
Lady Grey xoxo
