We need to remember His sinless life and sacrificial death, as well as His birth. I brought this little red ladder with me, to remind us of Christ and o f His sacrifi cial death for us, which furnishes us a way to heaven. Why is it red? “ Because Christ shed His blood on the cross for our sins.” Yes, you are right. The red ladder of salvation reaches from a sin-cursed earth to heaven. It is surprising and sad to find how many people try to reach heaven by some other ladder, instead of by the salvation ladder. Jesus Christ said “He that . . . climbeth up some other way . . . is a thief and a robber.” Here is a green ladder. It is the ladder of good works. It is surprising to learn how many people are climbing this ladder in the hope that they will reach heaven. They claim to be trying to keep the law and to obey the Sermon on the Mount A rich young man tried to reach heaven by this ladder, and Christ told him : “One thing thou lackest.” This ladder is not long enough to reach the top. And even if it were tall enough, the two steps near the top are broken. It is impossible to reach heaven by doing good deeds. This yellow ladder reminds us o f those who are rich and who think that by giving of their riches to the poor they themselves will reach heaven. This ladder is too short, and, besides, the two bottom steps are broken. Salvation is given to people with out money and without price. Cornelius gave much money to poor people, but he had to accept Christ as his Saviour. This white religious ladder is another which is often climbed. It is too short, and two steps in the middle are broken. The Ethiopian was a religious worshiper of God, but he was climbing the wrong lad der, and Philip showed him that he must take Christ and the ladder of salvation if he wanted to reach heaven. In thinking of Christmas, don’t forget the death of Christ and the ladder of sal vation. the blood-bought relief for the sinner, remission for the criminal, and reconcilia tion for the rebel (cf. John 1:12; Acts 10:43; 2 Cor. 5:12-20). Lesson 2 (Jer. 1 :6-10; 26:8-15) describes God’s choice of Jeremiah as a prophet ap pointed to speak to God’s people concern ing their evil ways; and it records also the hesitancy o f Jeremiah in accepting that high place* God encouraged His servant by promising to stand with him and to empower him for whatever he would be called upon to do or to speak. Lesson 3 (Jer. 7 :1-11, 21-23) reveals the ministry o f Jeremiah as God’s prophet. He reminded his people of their sinful ness and told o f God’s sure judgment upon sin. At the same time he gave God’s promise that if the people turned from their evil ways and returned to true wor ship of their God, the threatened judgment would be withheld. Jeremiah impressed the people with the fact that their outward ceremonies and sacrifices were displeas ing to God, as long as their hearts were turned away from Him. Lesson 4 (Dan. 5:17-28), the Interna tional Temperence Lesson, presents the dangers o f intemperance as they relate to matters o f food or drink or the use of

on this earth. I know that you remember the story of Adam and Eve—how God put them in the beautiful Garden of Eden, how He told them they must not eat of the fruit o f a certain tree in that garden, how they disobeyed Him, and because He is a just God, He had to punish them. God sent them from the garden, and sin and trouble and death followed their wicked act. Then it was that God made them a promise. Unless an atonement was made for their sin, Adam and Eve and their chil dren could never again stand in God’s presence, because our God is a perfect God, and they were no longer perfect. But God promised to send One who should die for them that they might again live in the presence o f God. It was to be His own perfect Son who should do this. Malachi reminded the people of this promise. He said: “The Lord, whom ye seek, shall sud denly come.” And that is the way the Lord did come. When the people had al most forgotten this reminder of Malachi (fo r the promise was fulfilled four hun dred years after Malachi told them about it), the Lord did come.

Golden T ext: “ But the mercy o f the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteous ness unto children’s children” (Psa. 103:17). Lesson 1 (Isa. 53:1-12) holds a preemi nent place in the quarter’s studies. It makes plain that sin is the cause of all the sor rows and troubles of man; that it is a crime against God; and that it is a rebel lion against the government of God. Be cause of His love and mercy, God has put away sin by the sacrifice of His Son. He now invites all men everywhere to accept BLACKBOARD LESSON
