Pet Memorial - Bubbles Saying goodbye to someone who has shared a long and special presence in my life, about a third of it to be exact, was so very difficult. I remember how I got Bubbles, by offering to foster a pregnant cat for a rescue group and volunteer to help place her kittens. The birth of the kittens was very exciting as I saw two gray tabbies, a brown tabby and an all-black kitten come into the world. Almost immediately the decision was made by my parents to keep the mom cat and she was named Sophie. One by one the kittens were found new loving homes. My parents also kept a kitten, so Sophie would have one of her own as a lifelong companion. I placed the gray female with my vet’s mother since she wanted a friend for her older cat, but within a few days it was clear that the older cat was very unhappy with the new arrival, so I got a call that things just weren’t working out. I was secretly delighted, since I really missed the little gray female as soon as she was gone. I had convinced myself she would have a great life with a cat lover whose daughter was a vet. As soon as I opened the carrier and saw her I was overjoyed and said, “you’re not going anywhere else”, and named her Bubbles. She was always a little shy but trusted me deeply and always very affectionate, even though she avoided most other people. She really was a “one person cat.” I did get another kitten when she was 7 months old so she wouldn’t grow up alone — a 3 month old Abyssinian, who I named Mango. They were lifelong friends until Mango passed away in 2015. Bubbles had health issues the last year of her life, but still a good quality of life until the last day when I came home and saw that she had reached the end and her body was just giving out. I had a very compassionate vet come to my home, so Bubbles passed away in her room and in my arms, where she had always felt happy and secure. — Beverly —
