The Plight Of Cats And Kittens In Our Shelter System

It is estimated are that 75% of the cats killed in shelters are kittens. Another stomach churning statistic is that only 1 in 12 kittens that make it into the shelter system will find their forever home.

without even getting a name or being loved by a human. Yet they came to love, and represent the loving joy they came to share with us. These facts are not well known, shocking most people I share them with. The reality is that kittens come into the shelters with little or no immunity, need to be fed every 2-3 hours, and are extremely vulnerable. They cannot be adopted out until they are two pounds, because they need to be big enough to spay/neuter. Many of these kittens were taken from their mothers too soon, by well-meaning humans who thought the shelter would take care of them and find them better homes. Many of them are killed the same day they are brought into the shelter.

Facts are hard to find because there are not any national kill statistics required by the government. Most shelters do not separate out the cat from kitten numbers. Others will count a whole litter of kittens (average of 2-6 kittens) as one cat. Many kittens die
