his own spiritual condition, is able to teach others the spiritual truths he has himself received. . . Other-worldliness (I Cor. 3 :3 ). He does not “walk as [other] men.” His manner of life is radically and fundamentally dif ferent from that of the man of the world, or even that of the carnal Christian, for he lives on an entirely different plane . . . The world is powerless to lure him away from Christ. To him, endless satisfaction and joy is found in the Word, and fellow ship, and service of Christ. Fruitfulness (Gal. 5:22, 23; John 15:8). The spiritual man, yielded as he is to the Holy Spirit, bears the fruit of the Spirit both in holy character and fruitful service. When the Master comes to his tree, He finds not leaves only, but luscious fruit as well. “He that is spiritual” lives in Canaan— the Promised Land flowing with milk and honey, the land of victory and rest The old life both of Egypt and of the wilder ness has been bidden an eternal farewell. As the life of the "Wilderness Christian" is barren, so that of the victorious or “Promised Land Christian” is fruitful. He who has come into his possessions knows richness and fullness, blessing and victory, that the carnal Christian can never know. Not that the enemy is less strong nor the battle less fierce, but that our Saviour, the heavenly Joshua, is going before! How then may our lives, so barren, so waste, become even as a watered garden or as a land that flows with milk and honey? The answer is, “Trust and obey.” Very definite commands are given: “Arise, go over this Jordan" (Josh. 1:2); in other words, possess your possessions. “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night" (v. 8 ). Get your marching orders; learn of Him. Meditation on the Word of God is the most fruitful means of regaining spiritual blessing and of vitalizing anemic spiritual life. It is the most fruitful source of spiritual strength and health. Furthermore it is not to be just the milk of the Word, nor just the manna of the wilderness walk, all pre pared and predigested, but it is to be searched out and prepared by each man for himself: "Prepare you victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the Lord your God giveth you to possess it” (v. 11). In the new land, the Land of Promise, the food of the wilderness experience does not satisfy, nor is the Christian in "the land” content to depend upon human leaders to prepare his food, to bring him spiritual nourishment through sermons and the like. No, the mature Christian enjoys the corn of the land; he learns to gain real nourish ment from the Word by his own efforts. Thus he becomes strong, fruitful, and able to help others. Unhindered by carnality, the Holy Spirit reproduces in the spiritual man the holy character of Christ, empowers him for fruitful service, and imparts to him con sistent victory in the conflict of life. His characteristics are: Maturity (Heb. 5:14). No longer is he a babe with bottle and comforter—he is able to take strong meat. Although wel coming all that human teachers can impart to him of the deep things of God, he is no longer dependent on them. Realizing as he does that “the field is the world," he ceases to be strongly sectarian. While not being contentious, he will, if convictions demand, “earnestly contend for the faith.” Con stantly more territory in his life is being brought under the sway of the Lord. Discernment (1 Cor. 2:14, 15). The spiritual man does not fall a prey to false teaching. The ungrieved Spirit of Truth within forewarns him of the approach of the spirit of error. He is keen of scent for erroneous doctrine whether in book or sermon. Ability to T each (Heb. 5:12, 13). The spiritual man, no longer preoccupied with Helps for the Leader T he S piritual M an
