JULY 18 Heavenly Music "The Lord is very pitiful, and o f tender mercy" (Jas. 5:11). To me those few words gleam with kindly light. I see in them a soft radiance as of those matchless pearls whereof the gates of heaven are made. There is an ex ceeding melody to my ear as well as to my heart in that word "tender.” Mercy is mu sic, and tender mercy Is the most exquisite form of it, especially to a broken heart. To one who Is despondent and despairing, this word is life from the dead. — C harles H addon S purgeon . "O the depth o f the riches both o f the wisdom and knowledge o f God! how un searchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!" (Rom. 11:33). Can you make Paul’s exclamation yours? You have had your experiences. You have known sunny days. You have also seen cloudy skies. What about the way in which God has led you these many years? What about God’s hand in history, particularly the history of His people? Let us remember that meditation must precede exultation. W e cannot exclaim unless the fountains of our heart are stirred. A moved soul is an enlightened soul, a surrendered soul, a soul that follows where God leads. —E. F. J. V an H alsem a . "And when he was accused o f the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing" (Matt. 27:12). Why is He silent, when a word Would slay His accusers all? Why does He meekly bear their taunts. When angels wait His call? “He was made sin”: my sin He bore Upon the accursed tree: And sin hath no defense to make— His silence was for me. JULY 20 Why Silent? JULY 19 Unsearchable Depths
JULY 21 “Boasting Excluded” "Thy gentleness hath made me great" (2 Sam. 22:36). Thy gentleness, dear Saviour! Ah, there’s the secret. There was naught within me that made me to differ from other sightless men who have wanted to be guides, until one day Thou didst use me as—a candle stick! Thou didst put into my heart the light of the knowledge of Thy glory as it comes from Thy face! It is truly sweet to me, every little evidence that others are blessed through me. But I desire to be kept forever mindful of the reason: “Naught have I gotten but what I received! Grace hath bestowed it since I have believed!”* — R ichard E llsworth D a y . *(Reprinted from Filled With the Spirit by special permission o f Zondervan Pub. House. Grand Rapids, Mich.) JULY 22 Speaking with Tears "Turn ye, turn y e from your evil ways; for why will y e die?" (Ezek. 33:11). W e must not forget that the wrath of the Lamb is a Biblical expression. God Is not angry as man Is. Wrath is not a sudden, resentful and impetuous passion, but a calm and eternal principle of opposition to all evil. The preacher needs, when referring to it, soft tones, tearful eyes, a quivering voice, a holy pathos, a divine gentleness and compassion. Then even the severer at tributes of God seem but part of His per fection, even of His love. — A rth u r T . P ierson . JULY 23 A Powerful Lesson " For 7 have given you an example, that y e should do as 1 have done to you" (John 13:15). He took a towel, and a basin of water, and washed their feet; yet among those men was Judas, and there is no record of criticism or rebuke or anger; there is no re sentment in our Lord's life, no exposure of the sin that Judas had committed. There is no attempted revenge, there is nothing in our Lord’s life or in His attitude to Judas but an unfailing, unconquerable love. The disciples discovered the meaning of this later on, and they marvelled that anybody could know as Christ knew what Judas had done, and yet kneel and wash his feet. —W . W . C a sh . JULY 24 Sin “Thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins” (Matt. 1 : 21 ) . A man does not go to the doctor when he feels quite well; it is only when he realizes his need that he seeks the doctor’s help. And so today men and women are not seeking after Jesus Christ, because they have not felt the deep sense of their need . . . When we look inside the church, do we not feel sometimes that there is just the same need of a deeper sense of sin? May the Holy Spirit Himself convince us and convict us afresh. May He bring us back to Jesus Christ for His cleansing. —J, M, B. D un can .

Will he have had the benefit of teachers experienced in preparing boys for college? During one of his most impres sionable years, will he have felt the influence of Christian masters in the classroom, on the athletic field, in the dormitory?
Will he have been encouraged in j a definite decision for Christ, as the manly, courageous step? These are a few of the challenging questions that every parent of boys should ask himself now.
