JULY 25 Weights

" W herefore, seeing we also are com passed about with so great a cloud o f wit nesses, let us lag aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us" (Heb. 12:1). Many things are “weights” that are no “sins”: and if we are to run fast we must run light; and if we are to do any good in this world we have to live by rigid control and abstain from much that is perfectly legitimate, because, if we do not, we shall fail in accomplishing the highest purposes for which we are here . . . we have to apply the knife very closely and cut to the quick, if we would have leisure and sympathy and affection left for loftier objects. — A lexand er M aclaren . "W hich things have indeed a show o f wisdom in will-worship, and humility, and severity to the body; but are not o f any value against the indulgence o f the flesh " (Col. 2:23, R .V .). It is possible to wear a hair shirt and be sensual. It is possible to lacerate the body with whips and scourges and think inde cently while we do it. W e are risen with Christ; therefore, we are to seek the upper things, to set our minds on the upper things; to have a true view of our Lord, to see Him Lord of creation, Master of death. Recon ciler of the universe; and then by living union with Him, we shall need none of these things which never yet made men spiritual. —G. C am pbell M organ . “H e that spared not his own Son, but de livered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?" (Rom. 8:32). Did He once suffer agony On cruel Calvary, And shall He hear thy cry of pain And fail to comfort thee? Did He once weep for others’ woes And bind the broken heart, And shall He see thee bowed with grief And fail to share a part? Canst thou not trust His loving heart? Oh, gaze on Calvary! If He hath loved thee then so much, Shall He not care for thee? — E . M argaret C larkson . JULY 28 The Christian’s Seal "And grieve not the Holy Spirit o f God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day o f re demption" (Eph. 4:30). At my act of faith in Jesus Christ as my Saviour, the Holy Ghost enters my life, and He becomes the seal of God’s accept ance. He is Himself the life-giving assur ance from God that I belong to Him. He is Himself the secret of all the glorious inherit ance that is bound up for every child of God in Jesus Christ. GoodNews for YOU! IF YOU SUFFER FROM EITHER ASTHMA or HAY-FEVER Bead this striking letter from a well known Christian Specialist associated with the famous Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. “ This is a copy of an unsolicited letter recently received from a trained nurse who returned to her home in Canada about a week ago, in fear and trembling lest an attack of her old enemy, Asthma, should seize her. 1 have never met her, but hearing of her great suffering, I suggested ASTONE TABLETS through a friend in New York City:—— *Dear Doctor . . • / do truly thank God for putting it into your heart to tell me about ASTONE. It has been a real life saver. Thus far I have been entirely free of Asthma and this is a remarkable statement. Formerly I suffered from the day of arrival to the day of departure from Canada. Vm so happy about this. My heart is continually filled with praise to God for his marvelous love in sending this remedy along at just the right time. If we could only trust Him more, how H e would honour our faith . . . Very sincerely and thankfully yours ...*** Then read the following letter from a Bible School graduate of Alberta, Canada# where winter temperatures fall far below zero. “Since taking ASTONE my brother has not had an attack of Asthma. We are so thankful to God for we believe it is a real answer to prayer. It certainly is a treat for my brother——who has Asthma— to be able now^ to attend church, Sunday-School and our Young People*s meetings without being sick afterwards. Now, if he does feel any ill effects, he feels fine as soon as he takes ASTONE. Praise God for His goodness to us.** ASTONE TABLETS are the formula of a missionary from India. Yes, thank God. The apostle says we are confident that He who has begun a good work in us will finish it. And in the Epistle to the Corinthians he says, “Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord . . . W e are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” —W . Y . F u llerto n . JULY 31 Complete Sanctification “The Lord m ake you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as w e do toward you; to the end he may stablish your hearts unblamable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming o f our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints" (1 Thess. 3:12, 13). It is at His coming that the Lord Jesus is to establish our hearts in holiness before our God and Father. It is through our Lord making us to increase and abound in love unto one another and unto all men that this is accomplished. It is not in the life that now is, nor is it at death, but at the coming of Christ, that we are to be entirely sancti fied.— R. A. T orrey .

pose of the Holy Ghost is to abide in the believer, and then to fill out the whole of the human life, spirit, soul, and body. — T . M . B am ber . JULY 29 The Valley of Ditches "Make this valley full o f ditches . . . That valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink" (2 Ki. 3:16, 17). In this story we are faced with the great problem of the lack o f W ater . . . spiritual dryness and powerlessness are the results of conformity with the world and with the flesh . . . You want water; get ready for it. And that is what God says to us. You want blessing; then get ready for it. And that will mean real humiliation. Those things which we look upon merely as infirmities have got to be faced as sins . . . He can bless us, and He will bless us. Are you willing? Are you ready? —H. E arnshaw S m ith . JULY 30 Confidence "Rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh" (Phil. 3 :3 ). If there is to be no confidence in the flesh, are we not to have any confidence?
