; Not long ago the governor of the prov ince paid a visit to the Christian schools in Canton. This was the first time that a dignitary of such rank had ever come informally and the surprise was great when the governor and his secretary, in official dress, high hats and white clothes, were seen walking up the main road. This new democartic governor of the thirty millions of people of the province of Shantung is deeply interested in the work of Christian education. He inspected all the school rooms with great interest and a week later returned for a special meet ing with the student-body, bringing many of the officials with him.
Since the opening* of the new hospital at Chengtu, several tens of thousands of anti-cigarette tracts ha,ve been given to patients. In addition of late we haye been giving each patient a tract on the fly. We note with pleasure 'that the foreigners in charge of the sale of cigarettes in this city have left, mainly because profits -were nil. The Lakawn Industrial School in Siam has a former pupil now its engineer who recently set up and started a steam pump® ing plant for a farmer near the mission. Five years ago he Was the head of a rob- her band. He has learned to read and write in the Lakawn School “as well as something about honor, honesty and steam.”

loves all men, but He has an altogether pe culiar love for Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ was the eternal object of His love, it was a love, not a pity, but of complaisance. God the Father was perfectly satisfied with Jesus Christ, in Him He was. well pleased, (Matt. 3:17), and just so the Lord Jesus Christ has the same perfect delight in His obedient disciples as the Father Jiad in Him. Does the phrase “my love” in John 15 : 9 , mean Christ’s love for His disciples, or the love of the disciples for Him? It means Christ’s love for His disciples. The phrase in the Greek is a peculiarly strong one; it is not the ordinary construc tion for “my” but a vëry emphatic “my” which it is difficult, if not impossible, ■ to altogether reproduce in English. The words in verse 10 translated “my love” are not the same as those translated “my love” in verse 9, they are not so. emphatic, but "they do refer to the same love, viz., Christ’s love for those who keep His commandments. In John 15:9 we read: “A s the_. Bather hath*loved me, so have I loved you; con tinue ye in my love.” How hath the Father loved Jesus? What is the force of the in definite particle, “so”? There are here really two questions and we will,answer the last one first. The word “so” in our.English Version is not an ac curate translation of the Greek word. The thought of “so” is found in the word trans lated “as” at the beginning of the sentence, and this word is a very strong word, which is brought out in the Revised Version by rendering it “even as.” The exact force of the Greek is brought out. in the Revised Version not only in this, but in the trans lation of the, first two clauses of the sen tence, viz,, “Even as thé Father hath loved me, I also have loved you.” The force of the whole construction, not merely of the word “also,” Js that Jesus .Christ has for His obedient disciples precisely the same love that the Father had for Jesus Christ.
