WORK OF THE BIBLE WOMEN

Mrs. T. C. Horton, Supt.

H’s. home, I knew He was ■sending me help. I had never prayed aloud in my life before. Now, help has come and I atn satisfied with Him.” A worker called on a woman who for ten years had been in Christian Science and was perfectly, satisfied with her belief, but said, “If I were dying, or any of my family were, I would call a minister of an orthodox church.” So Christian Science seems to be very well to live by, but not to die by. A woman very ill, having recently had a critical operation. The worker gave her some passages from the Word, comment ing as • she quoted. She was interrupted' with the rather startling remark, “That’s so comforting and beautiful; you must be a Christian Scientist.” A little questioning drew forth the information that the invalid had just begun the study of Christian Sci ence when she was taken suddenly ill. In a few words the worker made the way of salvation plain, and that without the shed ding of blood, there is no remission;” that Science and Health was in direct opposi tion to the Word of God. It was cheering to receive the assurance, that since that was so, she would have nothing more to do with it, but; would put her confidence in Him who died for her sins and rose again for her justification. Because of the accidental death of her husband, a young widow decided that she did not believe in God, but acknowledged her utter wretchedness and despair.

TN the autumn of 1915 a Bible Woman A went to an outlying section of the city to visit the women in their homes and get them together, if possible, for Bible study. One woman, eager for a Bible class, opened her homd and invited her neighbors to come in. One only woman responded to the invitation, and she, half-sick, dis couraged and over-burdened by domestic ’troubles and cares, was turning to Chris tian Science in the hope of relief. But the Bible Woman read and explained the first verses of Jotin’s Gospel and then asked the two women to join with her in prayer, kneeling, io th prayed. The neighbor then asked that the class meet the following week in her home, and the room was well filled with women when the hour arrived. For almost a year, week by jreek, the class met in this home. The members grew chiefly through the personal touch and ministry of this one woman. It was beautiful to witness her own growth dat ing from the day when she declared her purpose to stand forever upon the Word of God. There was immediate response to her faith as the Holy Spirit gave light and enabled her to understand the Word. Her prayers were always filled with thanks giving. One day, recently, in conversation with the Bible woman, she gave this testimony. *T have found the Lord Jesus Christ in the study of His own Word. Oh, how greatly I needed H im ! And from the moment I opened my lips in prayer that day in Mrs.
