DO IT YOURSELF SPIRITISM M e c e n t l y a startling series of arti cles appeared in the New York Journal-American from which news paper we have been granted kind per mission to quote. Under the general title, “The Psychic World and You,” with byline Ruth Montgomery, près- ent-day spiritism is explored in its many phases — meditation, dreams, healing, séances, etc. In the third ar ticle dated Sept. 10, 1963 and en titled “How to Make Contact with Spirits,” reference is made to Arthur Ford as “America’s foremost living medium . . . an ordained Christian minister . . . one of the leaders of a church-oriented seminar . . . to help others develop their latent psychic qualities.” “Seven years ago Ford and other ministers and educators founded the Spiritual Fellowship to probe psy chic phenomena within the frame work of the church (ital. ours).” Claiming the 14th chapter of First Corinthians for his “scriptural au thority,” Ford uses as his “spiritual control” a man named Fletcher, a French Canadian who was killed in World War I. He claims that his belief in his own psychic powers re sulted from his dreaming correctly in advance the roster of battle and influenza casualties. The article con tinues, giving the Do It Yourself in structions: “Before trying to develop your psy chic gifts, Ford suggests that you join or organize a small group of inter ested people in your church. “If you get a group together for meditations, something will begin to happen, Ford explains. He says meetings should be held weekly, and to prepare for them each member must set aside the same time each day for private meditation. “Here are Ford’s explicit instruc tions on how to attempt to contact discarnate ‘spirits’: “Seek a quiet spot in some room of your house, where you can be un disturbed. Shut out all objective light. Sit in a comfortable chair, making sure to keep your spine straight, or lie on your back on the floor. Then forget your body. “If there is a particular loved one who has advanced through ‘death’
