Paul WRANITZKY (1756–1808) Orchestral Works, Vol. 6 Die Spanier in Peru, oder Rollas Tod Jolantha, Königin von Jerusalem Achmet und Zenide Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra Pardubice Marek Štilec
Key Features: •
Marek Štilec and the Czech Chamber Philharmonic Pardubice have recorded all five previous volumes in this series: ‘The Pardubice orchestra does a splendid job of this music. It is colourful, with good tempos, precise intonation, and an excellent balance of instruments. Conductor Štilec has an inherent knack for the style, and his delineation of the various movements allows for Wrantizky’s fine sense of scoring to emerge’ ( Fanfare on Vol. 4). • Together they have also recorded the music of Wranitzky’s contemporary Franz Ignaz Beck on 8.573248, 8.553790 and 8.570799 and 8.573249: ‘The playing is nicely nuanced, and even the slow movements have a forward-leaning flow’ ( American Record Guide ). • Štilec has also recorded Zdeněk Fibich’s Symphony No. 3 with the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava (8.574120): ‘A superb release of masterful music’ ( Fanfare ). • His other recordings of the works of Fibich for Naxos have won two WQXR Radio’s Album of the Week, Music Web International ’s 2013 and 2014 Recording of the Year, the 2013 Project of the Year for the magazine Hudební Rozhledy , and two Tip Harmonie 2014 award.
Vienna’s music scene at the end of the 18th century was home to many renowned composers, including Paul Wranitzky, who was a respected colleague of Mozart and Haydn and was frequently tasked with providing incidental music for the considerable number of newly written plays. The three pieces heard on this album demonstrate not only Wranitzky’s compositional diversity but a gift for symphonically conceived works featuring battle music, solemn polyphonic elements, and the popular Turkish style with its characteristic janissary percussion. About Marek Štilec, Conductor Czech conductor Marek Štilec is known as an interpreter of Classical orchestral repertoire and is a specialist in Czech Romantic and contemporary music. He has collaborated with orchestras the world over, including the New World Symphony, Ulster Orchestra, London Classical Soloists, Orchestra of the Swan, Berlin Camerata, Kammerphilharmonie Graz and Sinfonietta Bratislava. A prolific recording artist, he has made over 30 albums for labels including Naxos, ArcoDiva, cpo and Supraphon. In the field of historically informed performance Štilec has collaborated with ensembles including Czech Ensemble Baroque and Ensemble 18+. He is also the founder of the Wranitzky Kapelle and artistic director of Academy Prague Mannheim with Das Kurpfälzische Kammerorchester Mannheim.

Leoš JANÁČEK (1854–1928) The Cunning Little Vixen 1 † Šárka 2 † † arr. Fabrice Bollon Fabrice BOLLON (b. 1965) Twelve Lilies for Leoš 3 Samantha Gaul 1 , Irina Jae-Eun Park 1 , Sopranos Michael Borth, Baritone 1 Muriel Cantoreggi, Violin 2, 3 • Dina Fortuna-Bollon, Cello 2, 3 Cantus Juvenum Karlsruhe 1 Members of the Opernchor des Theater Freiburg 1 The Lily’s Project 1, 3 Fabrice Bollon 1, 3 Fabrice Bollon’s Janáček project was developed during the COVID lockdown when the use of large orchestras was forbidden. Bollon wrote a version of The Cunning Little Vixen for twelve instruments – not a reduction but an imaginative recreation employing new combinations of sounds, without brass. Janáček’s vital, highly personal orchestration inspired Bollon, in his version, to make the opera more accessible and open to a wider audience. He has also compressed Šárka into a duo and written Twelve Lilies for Leoš , a colourfully scored tribute employing reminiscences from Janáček’s works. About Fabrice Bollon, Composer and Conductor Fabrice Bollon has made numerous appearances with many renowned European orchestras, and from 2009 to 2021 served as general music director/chief conductor at Germany’s Theater Freiburg, overseeing numerous recordings for Naxos including a remarkable interpretation of Korngold’s Das Wunder der Heliane in 2018 (8.660410- 12). His work in Freiburg garnered international acclaim, including Editor’s Choice accolades in Gramophone magazine and Diapason d’Or Awards, among others. He has been chief conductor of the Staatskapelle Halle and general music director of the Halle Opera since August 2022. In 2020 his album of original compositions released on Naxos (8.574015) received a Choc de Classica award and an ICMA nomination.

Key Features: •
The Cunning Little Vixen was composed in 1923 so this is its 100-year anniversary, heard in this brand-new and unique chamber arrangement by Bollon. • Fabrice Bollon is a renowned conductor of French music on Naxos. His recording of Franck’s opera Hulda on 8.660480-82 is an American Record Guide Critic’s Choice disc: ‘The conducting, playing and choral singing here are all excellent. Bollon impressively ratchets up the dramatic tension with measured inexorability: the orchestral textures, all dense strings and melancholy, sobbing woodwind, really get under your skin; and the Theater Freiburg’s choruses sound splendid throughout’ ( Gramophone ). • He has also recorded three discs of the music of Magnard including the symphonies (8.574083 and 8.574082) and orchestral music (8.574084): ‘Bollon and his orchestra have the full measure of these captivating scores’ ( Fanfare ). • His remarkable interpretation of Korngold’s Das Wunder der Heliane in 2018 can be heard on 8.660410-12: ‘Bollon and his orchestral and choral forces indeed do a magnificent job with this sprawling, complex late-Romantic score’ ( Opera ).

Neil Thomson © Rafaella Pessoa
Claudio SANTORO (1919–1989) Symphony No. 8 Cello Concerto Denise de Freitas, Mezzo-soprano • Marina Martins, Cello Goiás Philharmonic Orchestra • Neil Thomson The 1960s proved to be a significant decade in Claudio Santoro’s ever-eventful life. The charged atmosphere of the Cello Concerto can be attributed to his experiences in East Berlin at the moment construction started on the Berlin Wall. Despite its challenging solo writing, the concerto is the most symphonically proportioned of all his concertante works. Exceptionally for Santoro, the dramatic Eighth Symphony combines serial techniques with an openly Expressionist idiom. Três Abstrações explores timbres and dynamic contrasts with string orchestra, while Interações Assintóticas is Santoro’s only work to use quarter-tone tuning for some remarkable effects. About Neil Thomson, Conductor Neil Thomson has been principal conductor and artistic director of the Goiás Philharmonic Orchestra since 2014, leading the orchestra to national prominence with its championing of Brazilian and contemporary repertoire. He also enjoys a busy international career working with all the major UK orchestras and the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra (Osesp), WDR Rundfunkorchester, Lahti Symphony Orchestra and the Romanian National Orchestra, among others. He has performed with many distinguished soloists including Dame Felicity Lott, Sir Thomas Allen, Sir James Galway, Nelson Freire, Jean Louis Steuerman and Antonio Meneses.

This release of his stunningly eloquent and virtuoso Cello Concerto is also a world premiere. • This release follows on from our recording of Santoro’s Symphonies Nos. 5 and 7 , also with the Goiás Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Neil Thomson (8.574402), released in March 2022: ‘The journey is navigated with aplomb by the Goiás Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Neil Thomson. Deftly woven counterpoint is contrasted with off-beat rhythms and expansive melodies that showcase each section of the orchestra to effect’ ( BBC Music Magazine ). • Santoro’s Symphonies Nos. 11 and 12 (8.574406) released in November 2022, also performed by the same forces received praise from Gramophone : ‘These impressive and rarely heard works are all played with absolute conviction and panache by the Goiás Philharmonic under Neil Thomson, and the recordings are crystal-clear’.

Robert SCHUMANN (1810–1856) Complete Organ Works Four Sketches for Pedal Piano • Studies for Pedal Piano Six Fugues on the Name BACH Tom Winpenny, Organ
Schumann’s studies in counterpoint during 1845 climaxed in what he described as a ‘Fugenpassion’. He rented a pedalboard attachment for his piano to extend his music’s textural possibilities and to help familiarise himself with organ technique. The resulting character pieces are amongst the most attractive examples for this instrument, and they translate so successfully to the organ that they have become a significant cornerstone of the repertoire. They are performed here on the historic and recently restored Furtwängler organ in Gronau, Germany – an instrument with a wide palette of colours that is well suited to Schumann’s expressive works. Key Features: • Tom Winpenny ’s recordings for Naxos include ‘impressive precision and clarity’ ( BBC Music Magazine ) in Messiaen’s La Nativité du Seigneur (8.573332), music by Malcolm Williamson (8.571375-76) and two volumes of organ works by Judith Bingham (8.572687 & 8.574251), in which he ‘opens an illuminating window on Bingham’s richly-coloured, programmatically driven engagement with the ‘king of instruments’. Winpenny’s contributions to our Organ Encyclopedia series also includes a recent recording of Francis Pott’s Christus (8.574252-53) in which he ‘plays this magnificent music with matching brilliance and flair’ ( Cathedral Music ) and gives ‘a truly spectacular performance’ ( American Record Guide ). • Booklet notes for this release have been written by Tom Winpenny, and there are additional notes on the organ used with full specifications of its impressive range of registers.

Domenico SCARLATTI (1685–1757) Complete Keyboard Sonatas, Vol. 27 Sergio Gallo, Piano
Domenico Scarlatti’s keyboard sonatas are among the most original of the 18th century, especially in their use of often discordant and chromatic harmonies. From the virtuoso Essercizi ( K.12 and 15 ) to the touching cantabile eloquence of the Sonata in G major, K.144 , most of the repertoire on this album consists of lesser-known works incorporating elements of dance forms from Spain and Portugal. The last three pieces, attributed to Scarlatti, are especially intriguing. They include a world premiere recording of the colourful Sonata in D minor , and the Sonata No. 5 in C major which ends the programme with a vivid display of musical fireworks. Key Features: • Domenico Scarlatti’s Keyboard Sonatas have appeared in complete editions on harpsichord from performers such as Scott Ross (Warner Classics) and Richard Lester (Nimbus), but while these sonatas are popular with today’s audiences and players alike our ongoing and highly collectable Complete Keyboard Sonatas edition will be one of only a very few recorded on modern instruments. • With its world premiere recording of the Sonata (Fuga) in D minor this 27th volume of our Scarlatti Keyboard Sonatas collection will be of particular interest to collectors beyond the many already acquiring each volume as it appears, and with a programme of less frequently heard sonatas from Scarlatti’s prodigious output this is yet another jewel in what is already a reference edition.

Joachim RAFF (1822–1882) Symphony No. 8 ‘Frü hlingsklänge’ • Symphony No. 9 ‘Im Sommer’ Slovak State Philharmonic • Urs Schneider Joachim Raff’s symphonies present a synthesis of pure music and the programmatic elements of the neo-German school exemplified in the symphonic poems of Liszt. His eighth symphony from 1876, Frühlingsklänge , was followed in 1878 with his ninth, Im Sommer , forming a celebration of spring and summer that are part of a set that make up the four seasons. Both are written in an immediately attractive and approachable style, and scored for a relatively modest orchestra of Classical rather than Wagnerian dimensions. Key Features: • This release previously appeared in 1992 on the Marco Polo label (8.223362) as a complete rarity. • These recordings of Joachim Raff’s symphonies were pioneering in their day and, while these works have since been taken up in recordings by the Tudor and cpo labels, they still stand as equals in terms of performance and recording quality. Raff’s symphonic ‘Four Seasons’ has its own appeal, and this part of our ongoing re-releases of Raff’s music will certainly whet collector’s appetites for more.
