DESERTS

Deserts are different in appear ance, too. Some are like our men tal picture, filled with sand dunes, There are some places in the Ara bian desert where one can see nothing but huge hills of sand, and as ttie wind blows the sand, the dunes change shape and size. Other deserts are covered with gravel or rocks. Some deserts, like the American Painted Desert, are colorful with b r igh tly colored sand or clay. Most of us think of deserts as sand-colored and hot. I know of one desert that is white and cold. It would be easier to freeze there, than to keep, warm! This “desert" is the area above the Arctic Circle. Not all deserts are hot and dry. Some geologists call this area in the Arctic 1| “ desert o f cold." The one quali fication for a desert is that there isn’t enough water there to keep most plants and humans alive. In the Arctic there is much water, but water in the form of ice and snow isn’t the kind of water that It would have to be we need thawed first. So, we can call this area a desert. There are other deserts that are called “Wet Deserts.” These are swampy places filled with salty water. These wet deserts have a certain type of algae or plants that grow in salt water, but most of the animals and plants that we commonly think of cannot live in salt water. You may have seen the salt flats of Utah. These large flat places are salt beaches. Some of it is solid salt, other places on these salt flats have sand mixed with salt, and so most animals and plants cannot live there.

S jjttftMEONE ONCE SAID, “What I 1 want to know most about a desert is how to get out of it!” As soon as someone says the word desert most of us think o f a large area filled with nothing but sand and with a hot burning sun overhead. Well, this is one kind of desert, but there are many other kinds. There are many different kinds of deserts. There are large ones, like the W great Sahara in Africa, the Gobi in Asia, and very small deserts like the Painted Desert in Ari zona.

The one thing that is needed in all deserts is water — water fit for life. Sometimes this life of ours is like a desert. We are “ thirsty” in our hearts for something. When the Lord Jesus was talking to the woman of Samaria, Hefgtold her that “ . . . Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst.” If wi •want to have life, we must drink water. If we want eternal life, we must believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. If we love Him and trust Him as our Sav iour, then fye do not need to be “ thirsty” for spiritual water, for He supplies our needs. He is the water of Life. ^
