PPC Honors Markens With Gair Award At Spring Conference BY ASHLEY PRAZYCH At its Spring Outlook and Strategies Conference March 23-25 in Lou- isville, Kentucky, the Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC) honored Im- mediate Past President, Ben Markens, with the Robert T. Gair Award for Lifetime Achievement. Since leading PPC beginning in 2008, Markens has reinforced PPC’s role as the trusted voice of the folding carton industry. His leadership leaves a legacy, not only in the growth of the association, but in the collaborative culture that continues to define PPC today.
Welch Packaging Group Acquires Jamel Containers Welch Packaging Group, Inc., a family-owned and operated manufacturer of custom corru- gated products, has announced its partner- ship with Jamel Containers of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Founded in 1984 in Collinsville, Alabama, Jamel Containers relocated to Chattanooga in 2011 and has served the greater Tri-State area with an experienced team focused on exceptional customer service, quality produc- tion, and quick turnaround. “We are delighted to welcome Jamel Con- tainers to the Welch family of companies. Jamel will further strengthen our presence and capabilities throughout Tennessee and the Tri-State region,” said Scott Welch, Pres- ident and CEO of Welch Packaging. “Jamel’s multi-pass digital printing and strong design talent complement our sister plants in East, Middle, and West Tennessee. Thus, strategi- cally positioning us to serve customers with a broad array of products and services. To en- hance confidence in customers’ supply chain reliability, Welch brings over 40 years of expe- rience and the redundancy of our sheet plant network to the market.”
To receive a Robert T. Gair Award is to be recognized for a lifetime of achievement in the folding carton industry. The award is PPC’s highest honor, recognizing individuals who have made extraordinary and last- ing contributions to the paperboard packaging industry. Named for the inventor of the modern folding carton, the award celebrates leadership that has shaped the industry’s strength and future. In a ceremony led by PPC President, Emily Leonczyk, and Hilda Mur- ray, PPC Board Chair, colleagues and friends came together to honor Markens and his many contributions. His wife, Jenny, and daughter, Beth, were also in attendance. As Leonczyk noted in her introduction, the Markens family has always been deeply supportive of their com- munity. BloApCo Floor Shredders
International Paper has announced plans to build a new corrugated box plant in Waterloo, Iowa, marking a signifi- cant addition to its U.S. manufacturing footprint. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2025, with the facility targeted to come online in the fourth quarter of 2026. Once operational, the plant is expected to employ more than 200 people, and approximately 85 new local job opportunities will be created to support the new plant. The site is being constructed as a large-scale, modern operation designed to support a wide range of corrugated packaging needs. Planned capabilities include advanced converting equipment with integrated quality systems, along with on-site design and testing labs to support packaging de- velopment. The facility will also incorporate regional ware- housing and inventory programs aimed at improving sup- ply chain visibility for customers across the Midwest and beyond. A representative from International Paper said, “We are excited to expand our U.S. footprint and deliver outstand- ing results for each other, our customers and our share- holders with the highest level of safety, quality, reliability and customer excellence.” Visit internationalpaper.com for more information.

Turn Trim Waste into Revenue One Size Never Fits All G.F. Puhl Designs Scrap Systems to Meet YOUR Needs
Our customers have various needs for scrap and dust collection systems based on several factors including building layout, available space for the equipment, distance conveyed, local codes for noise and height as well as air permitting and available operating and maintenance staff. Change the game with a custom-designed system by G.F. Puhl. It can make all the difference. When it comes to trim collection systems, there’s virtually no problem we haven’t solved.
Problem: No room for a scrap system inside the building. Solution: If your building footprint won’t support additional trim waste equipment, go outdoors. Exterior systems like an above-roof or ground-level concentrator will boost your capacity. Problem: No way to monitor the system unless you’re on site. Solution: G.F. Puhl leads the pack with proprietary technology that makes it possible to monitor the system from wherever you are. Request PLC touch screen controls with real-time pressure balancing and real-time remote via your smart phone or computer. G.F. Puhl’s expert engineering team has more than 50 years of combined experience designing, fabricating installing, and commissioning trim and dust collection systems of every kind, including outdoor systems with dual compactors, above roof systems with single or multiple cyclones and balers and below roof screen separator systems. If you’re looking for a vendor that can help you solve the scrap collection puzzle once and for all, contact G.F. Puhl today. 615.230.9500 or sales@gfpuhl.com
Problem: No space for a baler room. No budget for baler room staff. Solution: Try outdoor auger compactors requiring minimal operator interaction. Auger compactors achieve higher compaction than conventional ram compactors with less maintenance and no hydraulic fluid. Dual compactor systems allow continuous running while the waste hauler is changing out the container. Problem: No budget for a new system. Solution: Request a custom system with remanufactured equipment. G.F. Puhl sells remanufactured balers, blowers, separators, filters, and more. The savings can be significant and the warranty adds peace of mind. Problem: Your existing system doesn’t meet codes and the inspector has notified you of a problem with the existing system. Solution: G.F. Puhl’s NFPA trained engineering team designs NFPA and OSHA compliant systems that are as safe as they are durable. Problem: Dust is out of control. Solution: G.F. Puhl systems are designed to minimize the hazards created by ambient dust. Dust briquetters, certified explosion isolation valves, flame front diverters, and other safety features maximize safety.

AICC Canada To Host Inaugural Corrugated Collective In Niagara Falls
AICC Canada, in partnership with AICC International, will introduce a new event to the industry calendar with the inaugural Corrugated Col- lective, scheduled for February 23–24, 2027, in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Held at the Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview, the invitation-only event will be structured to create focused, meaningful interaction between in- dependent box plant leadership and the suppliers who support them. Limiting attendance to invited guests will ensure a fully committed and qualified audience and promote more meaningful networking con- versations. To qualify as a hosted guest, you must be an owner of any sheet plant or corrugated box plant in North America and an AICC mem- ber in good standing with either AICC Canada or AICC International. AICC will cover event costs for qualified executive attendees.
• Only standard hand tools are required for all maintenance • Direct drive with no chains or sprockets • No tools for media change required » just zip it up » media change out in minutes • Filter is accessible for visual inspection during operation, Significant Advantages Over Conventional Dust Filtration Technology
For suppliers, the in-person access to decision-makers is invaluable. The event will feature pre-scheduled one-on-one meetings with vetted executives, allowing for direct, uninterrupted dialogue. These meetings are supported by additional networking opportunities across receptions, meals, and informal gatherings, creating multiple touchpoints over the two-day program. Supplier participation will be capped, with registration set at $350, not including travel or accommodations. Sponsorship opportunities will also be limited, with an emphasis on maintaining the event’s smaller scale and ensuring balance between attendees. Organizers describe the Corrugated Collective as a response to the limitations of more traditional trade show environments. By narrowing the audience and structuring interactions in advance, the event aims to reduce distractions and make better use of participants’ time. The ap- proach is expected to resonate with both independent converters and supplier partners looking for more targeted engagement. The concept was first introduced during the AICC Fall Meeting, where early interest signaled an appetite for a different kind of industry event— one that leans into the relationship-driven nature of corrugated while acknowledging the time constraints facing today’s leadership teams. At its core, the Corrugated Collective is built around the idea that strong business relationships are still formed through direct, in-per- son conversation. By bringing together a pre-qualified group of deci- sion-makers and structuring time, AICC Canada is aiming to create an environment where those conversations can happen more naturally. Space is limited for this event to ensure a meaningful experience for all attendees. If you are interested in attending or reviewing sponsorship options, contact Leah Gardiner at admin@aiccbox.ca.

Georgia-Pacific Appoints New President, CEO
Ferguson Box Invests In Amtech’s EnCore ERP System
Georgia-Pacific has announced that David Duncan, execu- tive vice president of Georgia-Pacific's consumer products group, has been named president and CEO.
Fort Washington, Pennsylvania based Amtech Software has announced that Ferguson Supply & Box Manufactur- ing Company of Charlotte, North Carolina, has signed an agreement to upgrade its Imaginera platform to Amtech’s web-based EnCore ERP platform. Founded in 1959, Ferguson Box has long been a leader in the Southeast’s corrugated market. This ERP upgrade reflects a continued focus on modernizing systems to bet- ter support day-to-day operations across the business. Because EnCore is browser-based, it can be accessed across PCs, Macs, and tablets, giving teams more flexibil- ity on the plant floor and in the office. The system also allows users to tailor their experience. That includes cus- tomizable home screens, quick access to frequently used functions, and the ability to adjust how data is displayed, down to column visibility and layout. Search results can also be exported directly into Excel, simplifying reporting and analysis. Beyond usability, EnCore is designed to connect core functions across the operation, including order process- ing, production, inventory, and accounting into a single system. To learn about the full capabilities of EnCore, visit am- techsoftware.com .
Duncan joined the company in 2018 as executive vice president of the GP building products business, before moving into the consumer products leader role in 2019. Prior to joining GP, he served as president of performance solutions at INVISTA. With more than 28 years of experience at Koch com-

AICC Chairman Levesque Talks Corrugated On Packaging Podcast Terri-Lynn Levesque, vice president of administration at Royal Containers and current chairman of AICC, joined host Kaylee Vander, associate content and online editor at Packaging Impressions , for a recent episode of the Parlor Talks podcast to discuss her career path, leadership ap- proach, and outlook on the corrugated industry. The conversation, recorded during Women’s History Month, followed Levesque’s progression from a summer student on the plant floor to a senior leader and industry advocate, while also touching on broader shifts in work- force development, technology, and the role of women in packaging.
The Perfect Combo Get Peak Performance From Your Equipment with Matched Component Sets
Nothing’s more rewarding than a couple made for each other.
Levesque’s entry into corrugated began early and close to home. She started working summers at Royal Contain- ers while still in high school, following her mother into the plant. What began as a practical job opportunity became a long-term path. More than 28 years later, Royal remains the only company she has worked for. At the outset, her ambitions leaned toward teaching. That interest, she said, continues to shape how she ap- proaches her role today through mentoring, leadership de- velopment, and involvement in AICC. The setting changed, but the core focus on developing people remained. Her career at Royal Containers reflects steady move- ment across departments. She worked in roles spanning the plant floor, customer service, bookkeeping, estimating, and administration. That cross-functional experience now informs how she leads. Rather than imposing solutions, she described a pref- erence for allowing teams to work through challenges and develop their own answers. That process, she said, is es- sential to building problem-solvers and future leaders. Mentorship played a central role in her development. Levesque identified Royal Containers President Kim Nel- son as a particularly significant influence. Nelson provid- ed early opportunities in the office, supported Levesque’s continued education, and helped shape her professional trajectory. That investment, Levesque noted, reinforced her long-term commitment to the company and its future. That same focus on developing others now shapes her leadership priorities. As AICC chairman, she has centered her term on a theme of “legacy and action,” with an em- phasis on preparing the next generation of leaders. Levesque’s involvement with AICC spans more than a decade and includes participation in the Emerging Lead- ers program, which has grown significantly during that time. What began as a smaller initiative has expanded into a larger, more structured pipeline for young professionals entering the industry. She described that growth as a meaningful shift in how the industry approaches succession and leadership devel- opment. The increasing number of young professionals engaging with AICC reflects both opportunity and neces- sity as companies plan for long-term continuity. That focus extends to how organizations incorporate new perspectives. Levesque noted that younger profes- sionals are entering the industry from a wider range of backgrounds, including design, graphics, and engineer- ing, bringing new ideas and expectations. Technology is a key part of that shift. Artificial intelli- gence, in particular, is beginning to influence multiple areas of the business, from marketing and data analysis to cybersecurity and operations. While the full impact re- mains uncertain, Levesque said companies need to create space for younger employees who are more familiar with these tools to contribute and lead. She also pointed to a broader workforce dynamic: the presence of five generations working side by side. That environment introduces both challenges and opportu- nities, requiring leaders to balance experience with new approaches and adapt to differing expectations around communication and technology. The conversation also addressed the evolving role of women in the corrugated industry. Levesque said she has observed increased participation and visibility over the past decade, including more women in leadership roles and entrepreneurial positions. Organizations such as AICC have supported that shift through initiatives like the Women in Packaging group, which did not exist a decade ago. The growing presence of women across functions, particularly in sales and lead- ership, reflects a broader change in industry demograph- ics. Levesque also noted the role women often play in relationship-building within the industry. Corrugated’s col- laborative culture, including the willingness among com- panies to share knowledge and support one another, re- mains a defining characteristic. Looking back on her career, Levesque highlighted the importance of confidence and communication, particularly early on. She encouraged young professionals to speak up, ask questions, and bring forward solutions, even in en- vironments where they may feel less experienced. Building networks outside one’s own company was an-

other key point. Industry relationships, she said, provide access to knowledge and problem-solving resources that extend beyond internal capabilities. For those entering the industry today, Levesque stressed the importance of continuous learning and adapt- ability. Developing relationships with peers, as well as mentors both older and younger, can provide perspective and support as careers progress. Looking ahead, she described the corrugated industry as stable and growing, driven in part by continued demand from e-commerce and retail display applications. Advanc- es in automation and machinery are reshaping plant oper- ations, while data integration and digital tools are creating new opportunities for efficiency and insight. Artificial intelligence, she said, is likely to have one of the most significant impacts in the near term, particularly in how companies manage and interpret data across sys- tems. Despite the pace of change, Levesque’s outlook re- mains focused on preparation rather than disruption. The priority, she said, is ensuring the next generation is equipped to navigate that change and contribute to the industry’s continued growth. That focus on continuity—through people, relation- ships, and shared knowledge—remains a consistent theme in both her career and her approach to leadership.
The Foil & Specialty Effects Association (FSEA) has an- nounced it has recently launched a new version of its FinisherFinder.com website, creating a more user-friendly experience for graphic arts professionals, including Print Service Providers (PSPs), brand owners, and graphic de- signers to locate print embellishment, finishing, and bind- ing services. The site also includes a full listing of FSEA supplier members for components/consumables as well as machinery. The website is divided into sections for Embellishments & Specialty Effects Services, Finishing & Binding Services, Suppliers (Components/Consumables), and Suppliers (Ma- chinery). Once a main category is selected, visitors can se- lect specific sub-categories for the type of embellishment, finishing, or binding service they are interested in. “We believe the new FinisherFinder.com will be much easier to navigate and help visitors easily find the embel- lishment/finishing services or suppliers they are looking for,” commented FSEA Executive Director, Jeff Peterson. “This is an excellent resource for all types of graphic arts professionals and a wonderful benefit for our FSEA mem- bers.” To visit the new site, visit www.FinisherFinder.com or gain access through the FSEA website at www.fsea.com .

Ben Markens (CONT’D FROM PAGE 1)
PPC’s Transformation In 2008, the PPC was facing an uncertain time. Mem- bership was declining and many trade associations were failing. Markens stepped in. Not because it was easy, but because he believed in the industry. He took it over when the future looked dismal, and he saved the organization because he believed in it. When his group came on board, they basically re-engineered, re-marketed, rebranded the entire PPC. Under Markens’ leadership, losses stopped in year one. Membership grew, engagement deepened, and sponsor- ship expanded dramatically. The organization found not only stability, but renewed purpose. He was instrumental in leading, facilitating discussions and getting the organi- zation through the process, one year at a time. Markens is considered a legend in the industry. He be- lieved associations like the PPC should educate, inspire, and build for the future. He helped bring the TICCIT pro- gram to life, so elementary and middle school students can learn about recycling. The Paperboard Packaging Alliance (PPA) also came to life, which became the platform for the annual student de- sign competition. Markens had a unique way of deciding how to create more value than just having people come to meetings and having good speakers, but to participate and engage themselves in the multiple facets of what this industry can provide. Folding Carton Bootcamp is another program that came out of Markens’s leadership. If you think about the amount of people that have attended Bootcamp, there are thousands he has influenced with this training. Bootcamp is a hands-on experience for industry newbies where sup- pliers present their knowledge about the folding carton industry and the ultimate immersion for anyone new to the In a moving video tribute, Ben Markens’ career journey flashed by in photos and with complimentary commentary from industry colleagues. The audience learned just how a young boy raised in Oak Park, Illinois, would grow up to become one of the most influential voices in the fold- ing carton industry. From his humble beginnings as a ju- nior accountant at Federal Paperboard Inc. to becoming a plant manager at age 26 at Laurino Packaging, Markens’ passion for the industry was evident. His years at Laurino were formative in every sense. Professionally, he wrote a quality manual, created and programmed an estimating system, and negotiated two union contracts. Personally, it was also where he met Jenny, the love of his life. At 31, his curiosity about the industry led him to consult- ing and a break from plant management. He took the tech- niques, the methods, almost the science that was reserved for big integrated companies that owned paper mills and he made them accessible to everyone in the converting industry. Markens went on to earn the trust of family busi- nesses, independent converters, and global leaders alike. industry and eager to learn. Ben Markens, The Person
The Measure Of A Leader The Gair Award is not handed out with regularity; rath- er, it is reserved for candidates of exceptional merit. In his address to an audience of more than 300, Ken Petty from Indiana Carton Company shared, “It's the type of award that sits back and waits for someone to come into focus. Over the 20 years that I've known Ben and the PPC, he is certainly someone that's truly come into focus. He exem- plifies the tenets of the PPC Lifetime Achievement Award.” Petty went on to share the tenets of the Gair Award and reflected on how Markens exemplified them. He contin- ued, “As anyone who's sat next to Ben on a bus ride over to a hotel or restaurant can probably tell you, he figures out a way to get folding cartons into the conversation, no matter what. “That third component of the Gair Award is giving back to the communities in which you live. So, not only does Ben share his talents with us here in the PPC community, but he shares his talents back home in his community.”
Leonczyk added, “Ben is somebody who advocates to get others involved. He's the first to put his hand up and say, ‘how can I help? I want to make my community where I live richer, stronger, better.’ So tonight, I am humbled and honored to celebrate the impact that Ben has had on our industry and on all our lives.” Daryl Carlson, President of Royal Paper Box Company, also shared his perspective on why Ben’s contributions to PPC and the broader industry were so impactful. “Ben has had a deeply profound effect at Royal, inject- ing humor into many of our meetings. I've had the privi- lege of being mentored by both Ben and Royal's long-term owner, Jim Hodges, who was also a Gair Award winner in 2011. You'd think that with two guys mentoring me like that, I would know a lot more. But I am what I am.” Markens has helped infuse the energy of collaboration into PPC, from sharing ideas to working on challenges that no one individual can always solve. “Even with companies that compete in the marketplace, we all get together at the PPC and talk about things that will fundamentally make our business better and make it better for our customers,” Carlson said. Emily Leonczyk reflects on the profound impact Ben has had on her career.

He understood something fundamental: Leadership isn't about hierarchy. It's about connection. And then there is the bow tie. Emily Leonczyk shared, “I was thinking through the purpose of a bow tie and a few thoughts came to mind. For one, a bow tie symbolizes individuality, and Ben has certainly been that guy. Secondly, a bow tie symbolizes intelligence. And third, a bow tie represents creativity and craftiness. The tie may not define him, but it captures something essential about his spirit. Thoughtful, distinct, unafraid to stand apart. But more than anything, what peo- ple remember most about Ben is how he makes them feel and the lasting impact of his leadership.”

As the 100th year of PPC approaches, it's remarkable to trace its success back to Ben Markens. He later confirmed, “About the bow tie, true story. For some holiday, Jenny bought me a bow tie, and the first day I wore it, someone told me, ‘I guess you'll look smarter.’ And I was like, that's what I'm wearing!” Lessons In Leadership Leonczyk, Markens’ successor, returned to the stage to bring the ceremony full circle, reflecting on her own jour- ney with PPC: “Ben has taught me so much over the last seven years. A couple things that stay with me: Hope is not a strategy. Vision without execution is hallucination. And the future belongs to those who see possibilities before they become obvious. “Industries don't evolve by accident, they evolve be- cause of the individuals who show up and choose to contribute to something bigger than themselves. Ben de- livered on that vision. He opened doors. Created opportu- nities. He's shaped not only this industry, but our commu- nity, my life, our community back at home. “What makes Ben unique is that he doesn't represent one perspective of the paperboard industry. He represents all of them. It's his passion, his ability to relate to people, whether it's the person running a gluer or the one who's running the company. He's an educator, he's a teacher, and he really brings people together. He knows how to network individuals through the benefit of our industry. During his speech, Ben shared, “If you combine the best of me and Jenny, you get our daughter, Beth Markens, sometimes known as Ben Jr.”

A Virtual Toast Ann Piper, President and CEO of Joe Piper Incorporat- ed and long-time colleague and friend of Ben’s, tuned into the dinner with a virtual toast of her own. “I met Ben when he had just begun his consulting business to the conver- sion industry, and Joe Piper was just starting our convert- ing segment of our business. He came to work with us, taught us all the things that we didn't know, and he stayed in touch with us afterwards. He introduced us to many other companies and encouraged us to join the industry organizations. When I attended my first industry meeting, he made sure to introduce me to so many people, and

he helped me feel comfortable and included. He's worked with and promoted our industry through giant companies, mid-sized companies, and the smaller guys too. “Thank you, Ben, for being so inclusive of all of us. From the independents to the big guys, we are all better because of you. Congratulations.” The Closing Of A Chapter Markens finally took the stage to accept the Gair award and shared some thoughts and reflections of his own: “For almost a decade, I searched for a succession plan for PPC, and I found it when I recruited Emily Leonczyk. When she joined our team, I had a feeling from the first day that she was special, and over the past seven years, Emily has proven herself every single day. And if you're wondering why, it's simple. She understands associations, she under- stands PPC, and as she said in her remarks, she shares my passion for our industry. “Emily is business-focused, she's smart, collaborative, she's kind, she leads with heart. She has both the vision of where our association needs to go and the grit to see it through. She has my full support, my complete confi- dence, and in my judgment, PPC's future is in great hands. “In conclusion, I love folding cartons and don't think I could have ever found an industry in which I would have greater affiliation. I've had a long career, a great career, thanks in large part to the people in this room. PPC is a shared responsibility, and we have found the right leader. I'm excited to see what's next under Emily's leadership.”
