ACTEGA Launches Flexo Ink With Carbon-Negative Pigment BY GREG KISHBAUGH ACTEGA, a global specialist in inks and coatings, and Living Ink Tech- nologies, has launched ACTExact UV Black Algae Ink, the first com- mercially available UV flexographic ink formulated with carbon-nega- tive Algae Black pigment. The launch comes in tandem with its first commercial application: beverage labels printed by NextGen Label Group for Waiākea Hawaiian Volcanic Beverages.

Print & Graphics Scholarship Foundation Changes Name The Print & Graphics Scholarship Foundation (PGSF) will operate under a new name, The Foundation for Graphic Communication Ed- ucation, reflecting the organization’s broad- ened mission and the evolving graphic arts industries it serves. While the foundation has historically sup- ported students pursuing careers in print and graphics, its scope has expanded to en- compass the wider graphic communications ecosystem. Today, the foundation supports

students studying fields such as packaging, industrial inkjet, engineering, chemistry, and other emerging disciplines that drive modern graphic communications. The Foundation delivers support through four focus areas: Students, Educators, Com- munity, and Advocacy. Programs include scholarships, educational grants for class- room equipment, and support for student and educator participation in academic and indus- try events. Graphic Programs The Foundation also invests in entry-level graphic communications programs at techni- cal schools and high schools and supports the educational initiatives of the Graphic Communication Education Association. In ad- dition, the Foundation stewards Introduction to Graphic Communication , a widely used introductory textbook utilized by programs around the world.

The innovation was sponsored and supported by Waiākea, which earlier this year announced it would be the first food and beverage brand globally to commercialize algae-based inks on its labels across its supply chain. The brand first began R&D with partner Living Ink Technologies five years ago, aiming to replace petroleum-based car- bon black ink with an algae-derived alternative for all flexographic ap- plications. A Sustainable Future “Waiākea has tested and co-developed a number of sustainable inks and rigid materials over the last decade,” said Ryan Emmons, Co-Founder and CEO of Waiākea Hawaiian Volcanic Beverages. “None have met the performance standards and the carbon-reduction poten- tial needed for widespread adoption. ACTExact UV Black Algae Ink finally checks both boxes.” Building on that concept, ACTEGA and Living Ink Technologies en- tered into a joint development agreement in 2024 and collaborated
