Harmonised Standard for Amplifiers Finally Revised Peter Barnett, Consultant for CAI
the spectrum becoming increasingly crowded, it is important that all amplifiers for domestic use meet minimum standards of performance, and EN 303 354 defines those minimum standards. After a couple of years of use, it became clear that there were some shortcomings in the standard, and that changes would be needed in particular to address: Changes in use of the UHF TV spectrum For many years, TV signals had occupied the whole band from 470 MHz to 862 MHz. First, LTE-800 was introduced, and broadcasting lost the use of frequencies above 790 MHz. Then came LTE-700, with the loss to broadcasting of frequencies above 694 MHz.
If you’re in the business of selling amplifiers, whether that’s mastheads or domestic, you should already be aware of EN 303 354 v1.1.1, “Amplifiers and active antennas for TV broadcast reception in domestic premises; Harmonised Standard covering the essential requirements of article 3.2 of Directive 2014/53/EU”. This is the snappily titled standard that can be used to demonstrate compliance with the Radio Equipment Regulations (RER), which came into being when the EU’s Radio Equipment Directive (RED) was copied across to UK law as a result of Brexit. The combination of the RED (and now RER) together with this harmonised standard has had the desired effect of significantly improving the quality of amplifiers on the market in the UK, and across Europe.
