Importance of Reproduction We have known since at least the 1980’s, that reproduction is 10 times more important than growth traits and that reproduction is 20 times more important than carcass traits. That extra calf from that extra cow getting bred is significant. For those cows that calve in the first 21 days of the calving season we gain between 20 and 60 pounds of additional weaning weight to sell. Economic studies show the single most important factor contributing to profitability is more calves born in the first 21 days of the calving season. The target of 70% or more born in the first 21 days of the calving season is often considered the gold standard to strive for.
