STARVED IMAGINATION? D r. R ickard C. Halverson H ow long since you fed your soul on a sunrise or sunset, or real ly feasted on the sheer luxury of blue sky and fleecy clouds? Have you noticed lately the vaulted heav en on a black night, stars like gold dust everywhere? When is the last time you thought about God, His love and providence, the benefits with which He has endowed you, the Divine care your family has enjoyed? How often do you thank God for good food or clean sheets, for a faithful wife and precious children, for friendships and a good job, for health and strength, a whole body, for sight and hearing and speech? Do you nourish your mind with deep though t, d im ens ion and depth? Do you ever allow it to feast on God’s Word? Do you ever chal lenge your mind? You spend hundreds of dollars on things that are about as nour ishing as sawdust, and the Bread from heaven is a gift from God. God offers you, absolutely free, air and water, trees and flowers, moun tains and valleys, streams and lakes, sun and moon and stars. How desperately hungry your soul is for that which costs you nothing! With abounding wealth God sur rounds you. Do you submit your soul to a pale, thin, watered-down diet of crumbs and stale leftovers for which you pay a small fortune? What irony: God gives us an incal culable legacy in Jesus Christ, and we pauperize our souls. Do you cry out with the Psalmist: “ My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God. . . . My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the Lord: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God” ? (Psalms 42:2; 84:2). From Perspective, a weekly devotional letter for businessmen. Used by per mission. 29
