King's Business - 1970-08

up by the missionaries and used for buying and storing the fish. The fishermen brought their fish in each day and were paid on the spot. Soon trucks and even planes began to come in regularly and haul the fish away. Before long the fishing proj ect was a going concern. Then the famine dragged its weary way to an end. The mission was ready to move out, assuming that the people would go back to their nomadic life in the hills. But they didn't want to go. Actually they had never had it so good. Instead of going back, they scattered out along the lake shore and built vil lages. Today there are 11,000 Turkana living in the immediate area but there are only 250 left in the famine camp. The fish cooperative has been taken over by the people themselves with government super vision. Fish have become a way of life. Today the mission has a new challenge. The little one-room dis pensary has grown to three rooms and now a 12-bed hospital is going up beside it. The school has per manent buildings and African Chris tian teachers. The orphanage is getting cement block buildings and permanent status. And a people who long have roamed the desert hills are digging their roots into the lake side. Camels have disap peared and big herds of fat goats browse near the lake shore. Healthy children play in the sand and whole villages go down to watch their boats come in. It's still a hot desert land where sand blows eternally across the landscape and the pale blue sky mocks the pale blue lake saying that it is a mirage. Yet through its bounty men long lost in desert wastes have been drawn into an environment where the gospel of Jesus Christ can adequately be pre sented. A temporal harvest is com ing from the water but an eternal harvest from among the Turkana. Was it not our Lord who said, "Fol low me and I will make you fishers of men?" And was it not the same Lord who fed 5,000 by another lake?
