trade. What would you think about our starting a welding class with you as instructor?” Casey’s face lighted up. He liked the idea, and several months ago the first class was formed. The men se lected for instruction were as enthusi astic as Layne and Bonham, and the class was an immediate success. Those who “ graduate” can leave the ranch with the assurance that they are now trained to work, that they can be much happier because they are pre pared to do something useful. “We do everything possible through the facilities of the Union Rescue Mis sion to help men develop their abilities and to return to society as responsible Christian American citizens,” said Layne, who is actually Rev. Arthur Layne, for he is an ordained minister. “ The untrained young men have been the hardest with which to deal. We feel that this welding program is the answer and that once they master the trade, they will be given opportuni ties to get jobs to speed their rehabili tation.” The Green Oak Ranch foreman graduated from The Bible Institute of Los Angeles, Inc., and immediately went to Yermo, California, which had been the location of his Christian serv ice assignment during his BIOLA days. Before leaving, however, he mar ried Thelma Moon, who was also a Biolan with the same zeal to serve the Lord. Their two children, Charles and Grace, have also attended BIOLA. Rev. Arthur Layne founded a church at Yermo and later moved to Alhambra, California, where he built the Calvary Union Church. In 1943 he became a chalk artist and evangelist at the busy Victory Service Club, located next door to and sponsored by the Union Rescue Mission to serve the boys in military life. When the war ended, Hugh R. Murchison, long-time Union Rescue Mission president, got the idea of pur chasing a ranch to help to get the Skid Row converts away from their old haunts and evil companions and out into the open country where they could rebuild their sick bodies. So, Green Oak Ranch was purchased and Rev. Arthur Layne was named ranch manager. He considers this work his most effective ministry.
