INVESTMENT PLAN

HAVE T H IN E OW N W A Y , LORD Words by Adelaide A. Pollard Music by George C. Stebbins The author was a humble little woman who wished no earthly glory for her writings. She signed her poems by the initials “ A. A. P.” which accounts for the fact that most hymnals do not use her name in con nection with the hymn. In spite of her humility (or perhaps because of it), God mightily used her; she at tained distinction as a writer of both prose and poetry, and as a Bible teacher. She traveled widely, spent several years in England, and jour neyed to Africa in 1920. Returning to America in 1929 she continued traveling in Christian work until a week before her death; in fact, she was at the railroad station in New York City, enroute to fill an engage ment in Philadelphia, when she was taken violently ill, succumbing a w e e k later, December 20, 1934. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery, Fort Madison, Iowa. She was bom in Iowa, November 27, 1862. Once, while going through a par ticularly trying experience, she at tended a prayer meeting and heard an elderly woman use this sentence in her prayer, — “ But it’s alright, Lord; it doesn’t matter what you bring into our lives, just have your own way with us.” Miss Pollard went home much encouraged; that night she wrote the words of “ Have Thine Own Way, Lord.” Incidentally, her mother was a successful hymn-writer in the Moody- Sankey era, having written the words of Towner’s “ I Surrender All (not to be confused with Van De Venter’s more-recent hymn of the same name). IS M Y N A M E W R IT T EN THERE? Words by Mrs. M. A. Kidder Music by Frank M. Davis The author (1825-1905) was a Bap tist, spent her entire life in Massa chusetts, and wrote one thousand hymns, two of which are still in use, “W e Shall Sleep, But Not Forever” and “ Is M y Nam e W ritten There?” The latter was set to music by Frank M . Davis (1 83 9-189 6), an Indiana composer, in 1876.
